A proposal doesn’t appear out of the blue and gets approved. Meetings before the meetings are critical to the iterative process to go from idea 1.0 to the final version.

One key ingredient for good assessment is attention. While time is of course necessary, I think that when educators say time is a limitation for them, they also implicitly mean attention.

This requires us to develop both individual and systems level management of attention for better learning.

This piece gave me hope. It shined a light on what love can mean and do in people’s lives.

Medical schools report steep drop in enrollment of Black and Hispanic students after Supreme Court ruling Enrollment of Black and Hispanic students in medical schools dropped precipitously last year after the Supreme Court banned the consideration of race in admissions.

The data for enrollment to med school since the Supreme Court's aff. action decision shows Black enrollees down by 11.6% compared to last year and Latinx down by 10.8%. Even steeper drops for American Indian/ Alaska Natives - down by 22.1%, NHPI down by 4.3%.

The balance is delicate as it can risk an experience that can be defeating: the learner gave it their all, they face exhaustion, and still are not yet there.

The coaching then must not only be for the competencies or skills for improvement, but also provide the support the learner needs.

Something we have to do in CBME/feedback in the clinical setting is both recognize all the immense hard work that happened and that the learner still has important things to improve.

Acknowledge the immensity of effort caring for patients. And coach for improvement.

A maximizing productivity including through using tech to entirely focus on increasing output won’t be enough.

Sometimes quality inevitably takes time, slowing down, intensity of focus, an expert’s mindfulness to detail.

If fundamental to effective teaching is the fostering of trusting educational connection and co-creation between teacher and learner, then we must design for the factors required.

Time, clarity of purpose, available cognitive load, mastery of emotional intelligence to name a few.

The home icon version is better. Doesn’t distract your eye with a separate object and is a cleaner way to do the same thing imho.

When should assessment take time? When should it not be about a speed or quantity but about what is constructed within the relationship between teacher and learner? When should it be about the qualities of human care, compassion, coaching and educational craftsmanship?

The coming years will see the automation of assessment with the use of AI. Goals for volume of evidence in CBME will be met in part by the speed and productivity boost of these tools.

Another story will be how teaching and in-person assessment become bespoke and a craft service.

Yes tech and AI will assist with learning and be important tools.

And it is worth investing in people and their time and the teacher-trainee learning activities that are rich and built on trust, reflection, co-creation, and shared goals.

AI and the use of tech in assessment may help with productivity and speed. But I think it is worth thinking about assessment especially in the clinical environment also as a relational activity between a teacher and learner co-creating meaning to foster learning.

For those who are looking for Black Friday suggestions, I highly recommend buying a portable monitor.

A lightweight but high quality screen is a game changer for doing work even if it’s just at your kitchen table.

We should creating systems that gives time and space to teaching faculty paired with students to practice clinical skills in the authentic environment unburdened by juggling responsibilities.

We are often focused on the patients for whom we are the attending of record. We have our attention on the other learners (3+ students, ~2 interns, a senior resident, etc).
