I've redacted the name in this excerpt to be polite because I think this is a completely insane thing to say in the paper of record.

A Freeze on Medicaid Payments Is Forcing Cuts to Rural Health Care

“People are going to have to travel longer distances, or they’re going to go without care,” said Olivia Pennington, director of advocacy for Maine Family Planning. “We are a cornerstone of Maine’s health care system, and forcing us into this position puts even greater strain on that system.”

Making health insurance affordable and offering Medicaid/Medicare are the correct and moral things to do. And neither “grows the government”

This is what we want our taxes to pay for!

Some perspective: The ACA part of the shutdown fight is a little less than 0.1% of GDP.
Or ~0.5% of the federal budget.
It's in same ballpark as cost of Trump's estate tax cut.
It's much less than Elon Musk's potential $1 trillion compensation package.

Hasn’t this happened in prior shutdowns?

The two things Democrats really want:
*an ACA extension
*an end to Russ Vought and Trump deciding on their own whether to spend money appropriated by Congress.

If those 2 things were on the CR, neither of which have anything to do with illegal immigrants, I think every D would vote for it.

Trump making plans to send billions in cash bailouts to farmers with taxpayer money The president has also said he wants to use direct tariff revenue for the payments, but that could trigger a major fight in Congress.

I reported this months ago. In the 1st term, Trump could hand out $$ to farmers by tapping the Commodity Credit Corporation fund, a New Deal-era program that had a lot of cash in it. But it's down to under $4 billion now, meaning he'll need Congress for the rest. Another point of leverage.

Trump's call to split up the MMR childhood vaccine revives long-settled debate President Trump's suggestion that the combination measles, mumps and rubella vaccine should be separated marks a sharp break from decades of immunization practice.

“Combination vaccines were developed to reduce missed opportunities, increase coverage and minimize the trauma of multiple injections … Undoing that progress would put children at risk."
