Claims that artificial intelligence is on the cusp of transforming society are nothing new. In the 2010s, it was common to argue that advances in robotics and AI would wipe out as many as half the jobs in the entire economy, leading progressives to debate whether it was time for a universal basic income. But those narratives were little more than a distraction from how AI was really being used in many parts of society. AI didnโt bring about mass unemployment. Instead, it gave employers new tools to exploit workers. Companies like Amazon and Uber pioneered the rollout of algorithmic management techniques, which used automated systems to increase control over workers, crush their attempts to unionize, push down wages, and worsen working conditions. Gig work expanded, turning employees into contractors while offering the illusion of freedom and empowerment. In the years since, those technologies have proliferated into workplaces well beyond the major tech companies.
During the last AI hype wave, we didnโt see computers or robots replace a ton of workers. What we saw was companies like Amazon and Uber (then many more) roll out new technologies to increase their power over workers.

A journey map shows a very narrow, isolated issue. Expressed through an amalgamation of customer experiences to give an indication where problem(s) could lie. Backed up by user research and evidence.
Its not "heres a nice user experience boss"

We had a consultant powerpoint dork once imply the workforce was dumb, saying
"It's easy, just do X".
My reply:
"imagine we made that change and it was perfect. Now I have one cog in the machine spinning really quickly while everything else is going slowly.
Guess which cog breaks first".
I'm loving the complex systems thinking challenge and finding it a natural fit for my crazy brain that thrives in ambiguity.
It's also nice to work on something that creates the best possible conditions for designers to pick up the issue and create great solutions because the issue is well defined
I've been spending most of my time this year in the pre-discovery phase. Helping leaders uncover how to identify and articulate a problem or issue. So that they can describe that problem to others and pave the way to move into discovery.

There's a trend going around TikTok to have ChatGPT create visual alphabets (because the output is always full of ridiculous mistakes). I generated this one to use an example to help explain WHY AI image generators make these kinds of mistakes. It turned out even better/worse than expected.
