Tonight I’m thinking about Puffin classics it would be fun to mash up as Dr Who stories. I’ve already mentioned ‘War of the Worlds’ with the 2nd Doctor and Mrs Mills. Now I’m imagining Sinbad with the Sixth Doctor, Peri and Frobisher. Seven meets Pinocchio and Eight with Great Expectations…

happy friday afternoon, everyone!

I finished my paintings from Levenshulme’s Secret Lakes. (You should have seen some of the reactions I got when I was starting these in the open air…!) I carried on regardless - as ever…!)

trying this new style - a kind of comic book / beefcake style - drawing freehand onto ipad using patreon's new inks and watercolours. Quite pleased with my progress! Needing more models to help, of course! Hope you like these!

Back to drawing friends again and trying out a slightly new style.

Just to be clear, an English degree - learning to critically assess texts - is actually one of the most dangerous for people such as Badenoch.

An educated population, able to bring hundreds of years of context to statements in a dawning age of AI slop and attention-seeking dishonesty is also vital.

I’ll have some Christmassy-themed ( and Halloween themed!) pictures for sale on my stall at ‘Abstract Autumn’ at Overdraught bar, 855 Stockport rd, Levenshulme, on Thursday October 17th at 7pm. There’ll be lots of other artists and DJ Jeremy playing his records!

Even we most devoted #DoctorWho aficionados, who know existing novelisations, transcripts, iPlayer, archives, will find surprise and novelty in the book.

I had terrific fun editing it. Steve and Paul have done a marvellous job, and Paul’s distinctive accompanying illustrations are a joy, too.

Other recent narrative BBC Books acknowledge that #DoctorWho original episodes are readily available online, and so writing fresh perspectives on familiar stories is a preferred approach.

… while for fan enthusiasts, there’s an additional frisson of pleasure and recognition in recalling the source material.

As a decades-long #DoctorWho devotee, I remind myself that newer fans are coming to these stories for the first time — and approaches like this can be an appealing entry point.

Paul Magrs’ illustration for The Storyteller’s Arrival shows a horse drawn cart followed by a raven as it approaches the 15th Doctor, who sits cross-legged beside a smouldering campfire.

The retellings adopt a “1,001 Nights” approach; like the best of the novelisations, they have a distinctive, accessible prose style all ages can enjoy, sprinkled with vocabulary that amuses and surprises.
