Happy 50th to METAL HURLANT. I learned of it through it English-language counterpart in 1977. It changed my vision of what periodical comics could be as much as RAW 5 years later. My 12-year-old self likely picked it up for the boobs, but I stayed for the worlds of comics and sci fi it opened up.

The monsters are inside the house. And “fighting fascism” is now perceived as political & “controversial.” I have always told students that everything is up for debate in my classes, save fascism. I stand by that. Fascism is not a “position” but the end of all debate, all education, of democracy.

I do have a “fight fascism” sticker that’s been on my door for a decade. Because that never was a political position. Telling someone to “fight fascism” should be, for any member of a democratic society, equivalent to telling someone to breathe. You fight to keep fascism out, or democracy dies 2/3

I have long believed that professors should not post personal politics on their office doors. I have never posted on behalf of a candidate or an issue up for election. My politics are easily found on the internet, but my office doors should make all students feel welcome.

Blind hate & blind faith regarding AI are equally misguided. For every aspect of generative ai that has the potential to destroy there is another with the potential to improve life. The important thing is that we take AI back from those who have hijacked it & put it to work on behalf of humanity

I have been compulsively reading histories of naziism and fascism, and find myself almost somehow unable to stop. If they were making me more anxious and distraught I would stop but if anything they are having the opposite impact. I am baffled. But also AMA about naziism and fascism in general 🤕
