I do in fact like it because it's such a nice compact way to describe that guy who's dying to impress you with his shocking opinions. Pre-Internet that guy always used to sit next to me at parties, but now he has a captive audience.

That makes sense I guess! I thought you were going to say Bay area though.

Where do you live now? Not exactly cheap around here.

Is it "Voxell?" I'm listening to Vanity Fair and now I can't remember. I guess it's better than Cholmondeley.

Tortoise Shout His scream, and his moment's subsidence, The moment of eternal silence, Yet unreleased, and after the moment, the sudden, startling jerk of coition, and at once The inexpressible faint yell β€” And so o...

I apologize but I am obliged to post this D.H. Lawrence poem whenever this subject pops up (not as infrequently as you'd think). Truly one of the towering literary achievements in the genre of tortoise poetry.

Of course the massively underpaid filler articles will now be "AI content" that doesn't even net some poor desperate person $20 for 500 words.

Makes some sense for a mass of information that goes stale, e.g. tech info published to a site. Authorship less important than utility and accuracy, needs maintenance to review and update. It's just nuts to apply that term to art or journalism or whatever. Even anonymous underpaid website filler.

In no way defending any of this but in college my husband did backstage stuff for a production of Little Shop of Horrors in which Jackson played one of the backup singers. So arguably she can act and sing better than Gorsuch can ride a horse or whatever nonsense.

How do you eat a hot buttered eel when you're walking around outside? Eel on a stick? Eel breakfast sammich?

I bet the answer is "they took them home," but that's much less interesting.

I was against the back-to-school crusaders because of the public health implications, but let's not dump on people who arrange their lives with the reasonable expectation that they won't have to pay for 40ish hours of care every week to access education. On top of the annual summer camp expenses.

Honestly I kind of bristle at the term "free childcare." It's incredibly hard to find paid care for kids of school age even for after school, and even for very UMC parents who can throw money at the problem. School is set up assuming there's a parent home 3-6 daily + random holidays and half-days.

In my Portland bubble it was the POC and low income parents, who definitely needed child care the most, who did NOT want kids going back. The UMC parents didn't want kids missing out on "experiences" and milestones. I don't think daycare was the issue for them.

My kids finally graduated out of school buses but my younger stepkid's school regularly got calls ON THE MORNING OF announcing a route stoppage. I assume for families with non-flexible jobs or no car this resulted in many absences.

Seems like time to read Ursula Le Guin's novella "The New Atlantis" again. No particular reason.

I'm an early X-er and the YA section was almost all "problem novels" about teen mothers and alcoholics and so on. Extreme bummer. Judy Blume and Norma Klein were shocking in part because the sexy bits weren't depicted in the context of trauma and social disgrace.

Not dismissing the horrible racism at all but normalized entitlement of rich men to be surrounded by young beautiful women gives the predators cover. An old story: harems and Playboy bunnies. Women are decorations, not people with agency: why not pick them off a menu and occasionally consume them?

I already follow her! She's great. I'd like to have a whole feed though. The current reality requires a lot of cat pics.

Is there an especially good cats feed I should be following? The one I used to follow went away.

Park would be so great! I've had to do long waits at the Providence Gateway clinic across the street. Greenspace and cafe space would get a lot of use.

When I worked in tech writing I often had to point out that the sweet spot for messaging is somewhere between jargony robot update and cutesy clever reassurance. Imagine getting that sequence if, say, you had ordered the wrong thing by mistake. Grrrrrr.
