Did Epstein's chums never wonder why he (or one of his minions) was taking snaps of them hanging about in their Y-fronts or straddling a supine "inappropriate friend"?

And from the Civil War within only a century of the nation's founding, via the Indian wars, Klan lynchings, Kent State, the '60s assassinations, Mi Lai, Waco, OKC, Rodney King, Abu Ghraib to Minneapolis, with school shootings throughout, violence is a feature of American culture, not a bug.

I too was struck by the pile-up of sentence-ending prepositions (SEPs) as I was reading the novel. The number of them made me wonder whether he'd dictated it rather than having typed it (he is 88, after all). When used in moderation, though, SEPs aren't something I'm particularly bothered, er, by.

Storm Kristin update: We've got a 100 kph hoolie blowing in the Cadiz area.

My Temu shed was carried 10 yards down the patio - with everything in it - before being flipped over. It's now an unrecognisable tangle of flimsy metal plates that took me hours and 248 screws to put together.

RIP.

I'm on Qobuz and the story there is much the same as you report for Apple Music: "The Mirror" is available, but only if you specifically search for it. It doesn't appear in the new or recommended country releases lists at all. It must be, as you suggest, the record company not promoting it at all.

It could also be part of the mainstreaming of once isolated genres like country and hiphop. Checking, I see that Martina had half a dozen US mainstream Top 40 hits, whereas Tammy Wynette only ever had one! And we know that any mainstream pop career lasting more than ten years is a rare thing indeed.

Trisha Yearwood: The MirrorΒ (Deluxe) The Country genre is awash with incredible voices. My own tastes always tend towards the great singers, and I have less time for the croaky, broken-voiced, or quirky "Americana" types. For example, I know that people absolutely love Lucinda Williams, whose songwriting artistry is immense and whose voice is full of character, but she just didn't take with me in the same way as Martina McBride or Brandi Carlile or Trisha Yearwood.

I agree with all that. Queens of country used to have decades-long careers as A-listers (Tammy, Loretta...) but no longer. Another superb singer, who you mention, who faded away into practical obscurity much like Trisha is Martina McB. A feature of the popification of country: too old to be "hot"?
