We cannot end gender-based violence without confronting the ways in which our economic systems allow it to continue. While unaffordability skyrockets, more vulnerable people stay in violent situations because freedom is financially impossible. perspectivesjournal.ca/economic-lib...
21.07.2025 19:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In Canada, low to modest income families spend 94.6% of their wages on immediate needs. Whereas, the highest income Canadians spend only 55.7% of their income on immediate needs. 26.06.2025 17:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There are viable alternatives to capitalism. Cooperative and participatory economics emphasize democratic decision-making, self-management, and social ownership for the common good. The profit motive is left behind in favor of a society where wealth is shared and no one is left behind.
22.06.2025 23:16 β π 82 π 28 π¬ 3 π 3A wealthy country like Canada should be making dramatic investments in non-market housing to ensure that all our citizens have a better quality of life.
03.06.2025 19:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Among other countries that boast high GDPs and high standards of living, Canada has fallen far behind in social housing. According to CMHC, only 13% of our social housing stock was constructed by governments within the past 30 years.

31.03.2025 18:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We must urge our federal government to address the critical lack of social, supportive, and affordable housing options in our country.
28.03.2025 21:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0From watching your neighbour's baby while they hand out resumes to doing routine check-ins/resource connections for an elderly person living alone, there are many creative ways to ease the burden for singles in our communities. Single shouldn't mean alone.
25.03.2025 19:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We all have a responsibility to vote and advocate with the most vulnerable among us in mind. We also invite you to consider your responsibilities as a community member, neighbour, or friend. How can you reduce material barriers for single individuals or single parent families around you?
25.03.2025 19:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Here in Saskatoon, the impacts of worsening income inequality have reached most corners of our city.
We'd like to hear from our community. What do you think of the 2% increase?
You donβt have to rely on these programs or work with low income communities to see that the status quo is failing our communities. The fact is that Saskatchewanβs social assistance programs are not sufficiently addressing poverty.
21.03.2025 19:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Last year it was a 3% increase, this year itβs even lower. What is the purpose of a social assistance program that doesnβt keep up with the rising cost of rent and essentials? A $20/month increase will not address this illogical gap.
21.03.2025 19:56 β π 5 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0The Canadian economy isnβt built to benefit all. Our political leaders have enabled decades of worsening economic inequality and they have the power to stop it.Β
Thank you toΒ @c4tf.bsky.social for compiling this data.
Due to the gaps in our underfunded systems, our employment team often has to take on the roles of system navigator and advocate or find ways to cover the costs of job training etc. before they can begin to help someone actually pursue work.

One of our longtime Build Up Saskatoon crew members, Warren, recently shared his personal story with CBC Saskatchewan to give them an idea of exactly what it takes to keep someone housed and employed.

Inclusion Canada estimates that 73% of Canadians with an intellectual disability (who aren't living with family) live in poverty. The Canadian Human Rights Commission also reports that 1 in every 25 people with a disability experiences homelessness, compared to 1 in 100 for people w/o disabilities.

28.01.2025 19:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This month, the City of Saskatoon published the results from their annual resident survey. To us, they are a reminder that most people are united in their concern for our communities. The difficult step is getting more people on board with proven, just solutions to our shared crises π
28.01.2025 19:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In 2025, if you want to provide nonprofit affordable housing, you also have to provide advocacy and system navigation. The social safety net is dangerously thin and too many people are falling through the gaps.
It doesnβt have to be this way.
