FunFactFriday: Rare Earth elements (REE) are a group of 17 elements. Magnets use REEs such as neodymium & are used in medical tools such as MRI machines. REE permanent magnets are key to clean energy technology and are needed in wind turbines & electric cars. #RareEarths #CriticalMinerals

A four part comic panel painted in watercolor. Upper left: two clams are freshly dead, with one closed and buried in the sediment; a yellow fish examines the second clam, agape. Upper right: the buried clam ins filled in with a different color sediment - mostly silt. Two brown shark teeth are adjacent. Lower right: the clam mold and the shark teeth have become enriched in phosphate and are now blackened. Lower right: after some erosion, the mold has been eroded out onto the seafloor, along with the shark teeth, into a phosphatic lag deposit. The shell has been lost from the clam mold, which is now a steinkern (internal mold).

Fun fact: Indium is a soft metal that will make a high-pitched crackling sound when bent, which sounds a bit like wood burning on a log fire! It is caused by crystal twinning. #indium โ€˜s biggest producer, China, just announced export embargoes on this & 4 other materials. โžก๏ธ www.futureismine.co.uk

โญ๏ธFun Fact Friday โญ๏ธ Tungsten is named after the Swedish word for โ€œ heavy stoneโ€. Dense & hard, it also has the highest melting point of any metal. Nearly 3 X hotter than lava! Tungsten is used in a wide variety of applications that benefit from these properties such as hardmetal tools & drill heads.

Illustrations in The Quarterly journal of the Geological Society of London (1852) attributed to Protichnites, the oldest-known ichnogenus representing Cambrian arthropods walking on tidal flats. The central drag mark is thought to be the tail dragging. May be of interest to you @prehistorica.art.

Our UG numbers are holding steady at Exeter/ Camborne School of Mines, but I know the overall picture is challenging.

Mining is booming. The graduates are walking into good jobs in the mining and geotechnical industries at the moment. Mining engineers are also in high demand.

Itโ€™s Fun Fact Friday here at Future Is Mine, and today we are talking about vanadium. Fun fact: vanadium is named after the Norse goddess Vanadis, also known as Freya. Vanadium is an important ingredient in steel making it stronger. It is also used in aerospace alloys with titanium. #vanadium #FIM
