I believe its a reservoir used to raise or lower the water level in the canal locks. Its been in pictures as far back as I can find.

A lot depends on the lift capacity of that crane. But generally,exactly the opposite of how it was built.

The rumor had that going in the middle bottom of your picture, where the small parking lot is.

I hate to say this but we did WDW for the kids birthday when they were 8 and it was worth it and then some. The CMs and other guests made a huge deal about it and it was a core memory for them. Regardless, have fun! I think 9 is just about peak kid!
