Our answers to climate change are damaging nature As the extinction of plants and animals accelerates, our dependence on the natural world is deepening

And governments persist with incentives and subsidies that advance biodiversity destruction, writes Hank Paulson in @financialtimes.com.

Considering climate solutions in a vacuum is short-sighted and dangerous. Too many of them imperil nature. Solar farms are sited on virgin land. Wind farms continue to be built without simple changes that could prevent millions of bird collisions.

Since 1970, global wildlife populations have plunged by an average of 73%, and more than a quarter of our planet’s species now face extinction.

Nature needs advocates. Political will is needed. Action is essential. So is recognition that this work is not optional—it is foundational.

The biodiversity and climate crises continue the dual cycle of destruction, each exacerbating the other. Worse, our efforts to mitigate climate change too often increase biodiversity loss.

Biodiversity is essential for the health of our planet, yet it is in a sharp decline, driven mainly by human behavior.

Nature's destruction presents profound risks to human societies, and, as with any serious risk we face, the rational response is to take out an insurance policy.

Grasslands are teeming with biodiversity and are important carbon sinks. Yet, over the last two centuries, much of the grasslands across the US have been lost to agricultural expansion. By 2010, a staggering 60% of US grasslands had vanished. Globally, grasslands have endured a similar fate.
