An orange graphic featuring a photo of a Far Eastern Curlew catching a crab. Above the photo, text reads: Far Eastern Curlew. Numenius madagascariensis. Below the photo, text reads: Status: Endangered.
White text on an orange background. Text reads: The Far Eastern Curlew is the largest of the curlew species, and is the largest migratory wader in the world. It breeds in the Northeastern Asia including Siberia, the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia and northern China. In winter, it flies south to Australia, with some individuals also being found in New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
White text on an orange background. The call of the Far Eastern Curlew is similar to that of the Eurasian Curlew, but noticeably deeper in tone. Despite its status as a well-loved bird for the people who live within its range, the Far-Eastern Curlew has seen a dramatic decline in recent years due to a multitude of human induced factors. In Australia, numbers have declined by 81%, which is thought to be mainly due to habitat destruction in both the Yellow Sea and in Australia.
From the smallest curlew species yesterday to the largest for today's World Curlew Day Curlew Countdown!
The Far Eastern Curlew migrates along the East Asian – Australasian Flyway, breeding in Northwestern Asia & wintering in Australia (plus some in New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines & Indonesia.
