a fiercely independent thinker straddling economics and social work. hard to be in a bubble when you're in those two worlds. immigration issues, world justice issues, elder care issues, alzheimer’s issues.

“This isn’t just a bear, it’s a polar bear”(they are on a tropical island).
It completely exemplifies my confusion about the United States today.
My grandkids set up a lemonade stand today because of the UM football game.
Only in Ann Arbor would they make sure to include make gluten free cookies for their stand.
Just saw a video montage of folks reflecting on the Charlie Kirk shooting.
A gen Z white man actally said “Honestly, I’m shocked that this could happen in America today.”
Me too. I’m shocked, I tell you, just shocked. #satire
We need media outlets that foster knowledge and awareness more than ever right now.
Can we all put giving to NPR stations on our holiday lists this year?
Oh—and become a voluntary editor for Wikipedia.

The Murdoch siblings just sold out the country in exchange for 1 billion + each?
My father died last night. Dare I say that really good football is the salve I need to make it through the next few days?

Bowing to a bully is like drinking poison to quench thirst – it only deepens the crisis.
So, WTF?
Can we take a moment to appreciate that salt trucks in chicago are throwing shade at ICE?

No joke.
Libraries. I think libraries are the local institution that can help save us from fascism.
Libraries are:
-involved with community
-loved by children and adults
-places of info exchange
-accessible to almost anyone
-vested in knowledge pursuit
-already fighting banned books

Why are people still in “fascism is coming” mode?
When the sky is falling it’s time to start working to prop it up before it’s too late.
Yes, wallow. Then work.
It is difficult to watch my friends embark on the caretaking path. I want to warn them how difficult it is but I don’t want to fill them with discouragement.
At the top of the list is uncertainty about time. For how long will I be doing this?

BRAVO 👏
“If a classics scholar, a drunken bard, a noir detective and a Renaissance poet all had a baby, and that baby was a book, it would be “Hyperion.” “ (Pierce Brown, NYT, 08.15.2025).
Taking a break from Alzheimer’s caregiving before the big push for a memory care facility.
Wish me luck.

“I don’t believe in gravity”, proclaimed a new age acquaintance.
“That’s OK. It believes in you”.
According to AI, FFS stands for facial feminization surgery.

Doctor?
Yeah dad.
(Pointing to my purse) Is that a doctor?

Memory Care facilities in the States often don’t want to accept a resident who is a behavioral problem.
But behavioral problems are typically a hallmark or Alzheimer’s.

“This growing up business, it’s not for kids”.
I said this to a six year old during a conversation about sensitive issues. Oh, yeah, he’s six.
Agitation, aggression, and loss of control tantrums are common with Alzheimer’s. Dominant sometimes.
We just threw a BIG birthday party for him and this week is smooth sailing all the way.
Giving things to look forward to, social activities, and being treated special are super strategies.
Today’s Alzheimer’s tally: lost glasses, lost keys, lost hearing aids.
And having me lock and unlock the door with my key 10 times to prove my key works.

Greatly agitated, my father kept screaning at the woman who helps drive him places. She refused to drive him the next day.
So my 90 year old father with Alzheimer’s hitchhiked to where he wanted to go.

Denial may be the last refuge of a devastated mind.
“You never told me I have Alzheimer’s! I don’t have Alzheimer’s; give me back my car keys. How dare you say such a thing.”

If I thought Trump were smarter I could almost appreciate the slick irony of this statement. But he can’t think that quickly or even get what he said:
“No, no. We’re not a king,” Mr. Trump said. “We’re not a king at all, thank you very much.”
I was actually in favor of the changes David Hogg was trying to make.
He’s young and still needs to learn strategy but he’s trying to shake up the Democratic Party in a good way.
