If you are interested in what might happen to the neural responses during the same task in a sample of people with chronic hand-based pain, then even though this study was conducted after the one in the first post, that paper is already out (...because publishing):
doi.org/10.1371/jour...
This paper was a long bit of work, but with the help of co-authors @cejpreston.bsky.social, @bakerdh.bsky.social, and @mcfrenzie.bsky.social it is finally out!

Is interoceptive sensing unified across internal organs? π«π« Our high-powered psychophysical study (N=241) suggests not. Bayesian evidence indicates interoceptive processes are largely modality-specificβchallenging the idea of a unitary interoceptive sense.

28.02.2025 13:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Please do read the paper for more detail about these recommendations!
All recommendations are based on qualitative and quantitative data from participants with chronic pain conditions living in the UK when asked about barriers and facilitators to non-pharmaceutical research engagement.
1. Image of a person with a microphone, text saying "Advertise via community and trusted groups". 2. Image of books on a shelf, text saying "Detailed and accessible research information". 3. Image of a checklist, text saying "Clear information about eligibility". 4. Image of upward trend on a chart, text saying "Disclose potential for pain increase upfront". 5. Image of a mobile phone and an email logo, text saying "Contact details to discuss accessibility". 6. Image of a group of people, text saying "Approachable researchers, with lived experience". 7. Image of an academic hat and a hospital sign with a line through them, text saying "Informal and accessible research environments". 8. Image of a house and an online video call, text saying "Flexible, accessible participation options". 9. Image of 2 people, text saying "Facilitate attendance of a support person". 10. Image of an hourglass, text saying "Frequent breaks to reduce fatigue". 11. Image of one handing another money, text saying "Adequate compensation for time and travel". 12. Image of a clock with forward arrow, text saying "Explain long-term benefits or implications". 13. Image of a pen writing, text saying "Provide a lay summary of research findings".
We have created a little infographic showing 13 recommendations from our recent paper (doi.org/10.1136/bmjo...) about ways to improve the participant's experience when taking part in chronic pain research!
It is often not possible to include all recommendations, but several are easily implemented!
Delighted our research on resizing illusions as non-pharmaceutical pain relief is now available! We explored how illusions modulate pain perception, using EEG. Open access with data available too, because research should be accessible to everyone.

No evidence of SSEP changes were found, but several participants experienced clinically meaningful (>30%) pain reductions!

A great paper discussing the impact that a lack of diversity has for research and the importance of responsible generalisation practices.
Open science has come quite far, but the issues mentioned here need addressing, alongside understanding how open science can impact under-represented groups.

A great early Christmas present!
Our paper looking at things that make it harder (barriers) and things that could make it easier (facilitators) for people with chronic pain to take part in non-pharmaceutical research, but our findings extend to any chronic pain research involving people really!
