Pitch In a remote mountain village steeped in theocratic fear, twelve-year-old Roya ventures into the mist to rescue a strange, winged creature from a trapper’s cage. The rescue ends in disaster. Dragged home and sentenced to servitude under the cruel shrinekeeper, she watches her mother’s beloved books burn on a pyre. But Roya took something from the cage. A shard. Blue, glowing. Whispering a question only she can hear: What is my name? When Mogh Aedam arrives with black-cloaked knights, Roya realizes they’re hunting it. As the Order’s grip tightens, she must choose: deny the truth and survive—or embrace the forbidden power awakening inside her, and risk everything.

Her elbows shook, and saliva mixed with blood as it dripped from her lip. She could taste that too. She had cut herself somehow. Her hands were scratched as well, her knuckles bruised. I have to keep going.
