In unadjusted analyses, the mean weekly ratio between hospital-onset and community-onset infections increased from 2.9% prior to Omicron dominance to 7.6% (95% CI, 6.0%-9.1%) during Omicron dominance. After universal masking and testing ended, it increased to 15.5% (95% CI, 13.6%-17.4%), then fell to 8.0% (95% CI, 5.0%-11.0%) following resumption of masking among health care workers. Under the adjusted Poisson model (Figure), cessation of universal masking and testing was associated with a 25% increase in hospital-onset respiratory viral infections compared with the preceding Omicron-dominant period (rate ratio [RR], 1.25; 95% CI, 1.02-1.53), and resumption of masking among staff was associated with a 33% decrease in hospital-onset respiratory viral infections (RR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.52-0.85).

This paper is interesting for a few reasons. It shows that mask mandates in healthcare protect patients from infections, and removing mask mandates in healthcare harms patients.

A facility without a mask mandate is making a *deliberate choice* known to harm patients.

Those who oppose Covid mitigations say itโ€™s because we wonโ€™t stop until we reinstate lockdowns

Many disabled people have been locked down for 5 years. All we want is safe access to public spaces

Just give us clean air, paid sick time & masks in high risk public spaces.

It doesnโ€™t have to be hard.

A chest X-ray highlighting the pattern of blood vessel damage caused by acute COVID-19 lung disease

Here's my take on #COVID-19 (the disease not the pandemic).

It's not what you think it is ...

And thatโ€™s just the symptomatic stuff.

Thereโ€™s other stuff like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, vascular damage markersโ€ฆ

What do we think the ratio of โ€œI know I have a covid complicationโ€ to โ€œI have a covid complication but I havenโ€™t realised it yetโ€ is?

From my *social circle* I would say about 1:7.

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social Why are they not available to all? Why is JCVI being allowed to restrict vaccines, the majority of clinically vulnerable arenโ€™t getting invites. Hospitals are overloaded with COVID elongating stays.

If there really was no national shortage, only local ones as they claim. Then why were hospitals and GP surgeries and care homes nationally so grateful for donations of PPE? Whole community groups were setup solely for this purpose and continued running for a year. It was clearly national.

They courier blood and organs and test samples between hospitals every day, youโ€™d think they could manage a few boxes of ppe. ๐Ÿ™„

Can I ask, whatโ€™s the barrier to more people using Upper air UV?

Looking into this Iโ€™m thinking it would easy to achieve high air flow rates quietly through a wall/ceiling mounted box with UV lamps hidden inside.
Is it the concerns around exposed UV that are stopping people DIYโ€™ing this?

The curse of the โ€˜bespoke non-standard cost-effectiveness assessmentโ€™ strikes againโ€ฆ

JCVI have just announced the eligibility criteria for the Spring & Autumn 2025 Covid vaccination campaigns.

Iโ€™m afraid itโ€™s not good news.

Eligibility has been yet further reduced โฌ‡๏ธ

COVID VACCINE ELIGIBILITY ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง,
a thread๐Ÿงต

JCVI have just advised that, going forwards, eligibility for Covid vaccination will be even more tightly restricted.

But the โ€˜bespoke cost-effectiveness assessmentโ€™ upon which this is based is heavily flawedโ€ฆ

JCVI statement on COVID-19 vaccination in 2025 and spring 2026

How the heck is this 'cost-effectiveness' going to pan out in 5 years' time when most of the workforce are chronically sick and unable to work/work more than PT hours?
The next generation are also becoming disabled.
Wake up!!!!

The world isn't just ignoring the mountain of scientific evidence about Long Covid's severityโ€”the world is actively misreading it to claim the exact opposite. We have evidence that Long Covid is a big deal; they're pretending that the evidence says that it's not.

I never expected we'd reach a situation where people are more concerned about getting a virus on their PC or mobile device than they are about getting a virus that infects their own body - one which can significantly change their quality of life, or even end it.
Yet here we are.

We all agree to clean hands in healthcare.

BUT you should also want to breathe #CleanAir.

Until the government invests in ventilation, we must *all* act to protect vulnerable lives from preventable airborne infections.
