In Tennessee, their recruited senate candidate came in third in the primary a few years back. No Democrat is going to win anything in the south if they don't do outreach to the blue dot city black churches. Their anointed army vet lawyer did 100% county fairs and VFW pancake breakfasts.

Nobody should freak out when a pro-life and pro-gun democrat runs for a state legislative seat in a town an hour off the nearest freeway any more than they should freak out about a Democrat running as the second coming of Eugene Debs in Portlandia.

Not moderation as much as acknowledging that a winning candidate in one district might look widely different from one 100 miles away. Undoing gerrymandering is going to require winning back the state legislatures and there's no way around trying to compete in every pop 30k town with one high school.
