The afanc is a Welsh lake monster with poisonous quills that battles Peredur (Sir Percival) and other warriors of King Arthur. Early legends don't describe the afanc, and later depictions vary, such as a giant fish, a serpent, or even a beaver/crocodile hybrid.

In Norse mythology, Thor rescued the warrior Aurvandill from Jotunheim by carrying him in a basket. On the trip back, Thor noticed that one of Aurvandill's toes was sticking out of the basket and was frozen solid. Thor broke it off and threw it into the sky, where it became a star.
