I'd like to see this Cubs team to play with a little more fire as well... but this isn't on Counsell any more than it was on Ross. It's on organizational spending philosophy and the front office's obsession with one very specific type of player/personality. They are boring, even after 90+ wins.

They're boring. They are all the same type of dudes... which... they seem to be ok guys and the type you want on a team. But there has to be some sort of variance of personality and skillset on the team as well. And this group feels very uniform... very vanilla. Wonder bread in a baseball roster.

Brewers are the better team… and have been for years. It’s frustrating because it doesn’t have to be that way. But the Cubs ownership and front office have told you time and again that this is ok by them.

This was an interesting decision because the reason Counsell opted for Kittredge to open for Imanaga was to prevent the lefty from facing Tatis and Machado a turn through the order.

Imanaga didn't seem to have great command the last two innings but was still trusted vs. Machado with runner at 2B.

Getting Cease out of the game this early feels like a win. I know the Padres pen is very good… but still.

I don't get using one of your most reliable high-leverage relievers in the first inning... and I really don't get hitting a guy who is 1-21 against Cease third. You want a righty to start against the top of this order, use a different righty.
