Big day for UK climate wonks tomorrow: the 7th Carbon Budget document is out.
They only come around every five years, and these reports are pretty much the holy grail of what the UK has to do to get to net zero.
How can we make make sure the next wave of New Towns are flexible, adaptive, bottom-up and meet communities' changing needs?
We - @rtpiplanners.bsky.social - have just launched an Invitation to Tender for research answering these questions.
π£Budget is Β£35,000, deadline for proposals is 24 Febπ£.
Planners and academics in England have long, long, argued for a National Spatial Plan/Framework of some sort - today, the Royal Town Planning Institute has published a briefing that makes the case...

Yep, great to see the AI give plenty of prominence to such widespread issues...
29.08.2024 11:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm sure redesigning planning processes around the needs of AI will be absolutely fine and there'll be absolutely no unintended consequences.
29.08.2024 09:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0RTPI colleague just searched a *perfectly normal* query about aligning #housing and employment developments in Bing, and Copilot auto produced this absolutely insane dance-theme #AI summary that includes reference to:
* Artisanal cheese tasting
* Yurts
* The cha-cha slide
* 'Sad tango partners'
πΊThe RTPI are currently advertising for a Head of Policy and Public Affairs - an absolutely huge role at the core of the profession. If you're a planner with experience of leading campaigns and influencing, check it out...
28.08.2024 09:08 β π 5 π 4 π¬ 0 π 0This was exactly what I found - I know lots love Instagram-type content, but Threads seemed so 'empty' and less conversational.
27.08.2024 12:50 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's weird how satisfying it is that MHCLG has rebranded its Planning Super Squad as ATLAS 2.0
25.08.2024 19:32 β π 13 π 6 π¬ 5 π 1I know there are planning folks joining (especially from the RTPI ICN) who are looking for people to follow. Apologies for omissionsβ¦

Planners and planning geeks! This, by @catrionariddell.bsky.social and others, is probably the most comprehensive research on strategic planning in England I've ever read. A landmark. Check it out...

16.08.2024 12:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0One of my biggest worries about AI as it relates to policy (I'm not talking about mapping the genome or whatever) is not that it's too powerful. It's that it's nowhere near as powerful as many think it is, and yet there's a drive to rebuilding decision making systems around it.

14.08.2024 09:12 β π 45 π 3 π¬ 5 π 0An fascinating job ad in lots of ways.
Not least, the personal spec doesn't lead with experience of proactively creating brilliant places, but rather: "You will ideally... understand the challenges facing industry in securing approval for new development..."
