Daniel Slade: What Aristotle tells us about AI and the planning profession Dr Daniel Slade argues that a 2375-year-old work of philosophy brings useful insights into the planning profession’s relationship with AI.

Today @rtpiplanners.bsky.social published our introductory Practice Advice Note on spatial planning and AI, covering key concepts, risks, and opportunities.

...But what would Aristotle think?

Big day for UK climate wonks tomorrow: the 7th Carbon Budget document is out.

They only come around every five years, and these reports are pretty much the holy grail of what the UK has to do to get to net zero.

A National Spatial Framework for England The RTPI is calling for the establishment of a National Spatial Framework that corresponds to the National Industrial Strategy.

Planners and academics in England have long, long, argued for a National Spatial Plan/Framework of some sort - today, the Royal Town Planning Institute has published a briefing that makes the case...

Yep, great to see the AI give plenty of prominence to such widespread issues...

I'm sure redesigning planning processes around the needs of AI will be absolutely fine and there'll be absolutely no unintended consequences.

RTPI colleague just searched a *perfectly normal* query about aligning #housing and employment developments in Bing, and Copilot auto produced this absolutely insane dance-theme #AI summary that includes reference to:

* Artisanal cheese tasting
* Yurts
* The cha-cha slide
* 'Sad tango partners'

This was exactly what I found - I know lots love Instagram-type content, but Threads seemed so 'empty' and less conversational.

It's weird how satisfying it is that MHCLG has rebranded its Planning Super Squad as ATLAS 2.0

A map of statutory and non-statutory strategic planning currently happening in England.

Planners and planning geeks! This, by @catrionariddell.bsky.social and others, is probably the most comprehensive research on strategic planning in England I've ever read. A landmark. Check it out...

One of my biggest worries about AI as it relates to policy (I'm not talking about mapping the genome or whatever) is not that it's too powerful. It's that it's nowhere near as powerful as many think it is, and yet there's a drive to rebuilding decision making systems around it.

The Office for Place is recruiting for a new Chief Executive Officer This is an exciting opportunity to join the Office for Place as the new Chief Executive Officer in Stoke-on-Trent, an arms-length body to MHCLG.

An fascinating job ad in lots of ways.

Not least, the personal spec doesn't lead with experience of proactively creating brilliant places, but rather: "You will ideally... understand the challenges facing industry in securing approval for new development..."
