Not your usual cast of characters saying this - it's great to see aquaculture get the support it deserves from the ENGO community!

Was there food security there before these plants were erected?
30.01.2025 14:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You can get fish oil and meal from the parts of the fish that people don't eat
29.01.2025 20:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Many salmon runs in BC are suffering, and people often point to salmon farms as the reason (even though the science doesn't support this). But the truth is more complicated. This article outlines one of the main drivers of declines.

That much fish meal and fish oil is used. It doesn't mean that much fish was used....what else would the meal and oil go to?
28.01.2025 00:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'd love to see the billions of other farmed salmon that DONT look like that (I.e. are perfectly healthy)
28.01.2025 00:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How do you square the massively increased carbon footprint?
28.01.2025 00:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0@matthewfacciani.bsky.social I would love to speak to you about organizing an episode!

It's entirely conceivable they just happened to be sitting next to each other. No conspiracy needed.

14.12.2024 23:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Well said. We should all aspire to think so rationally and critically
10.12.2024 23:03 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Today's must-read!

05.12.2024 03:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Some fish and shellfish growers in Canada are experimenting with it. The largest producer in Canada is Acadian Seaplants but they largely harvest wild seaweed. Cascadia Seaweed is making a big push to commercialize in B.C.
05.12.2024 01:55 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I hear it's pretty easy to grow too! Just need to develop a stronger market demand for the products
05.12.2024 00:45 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0If you feel the B.C. salmon farming transition decision is justified, I implore you to read this with an open mind

It's one aspect of carbon reduction that some say must happen. As well, it's driven by demand for those products. How do you get billions of people to stop consuming these products?

28.11.2024 15:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Okay, but did they kill the whales?
28.11.2024 15:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I want the wild salmon to flourish as well as the salmon farming industry. I know this is possible because that's what the science says. What's especially frustrating about this is that the wild salmon will not just magically reappear if the farms disappear.

Hey Paul, where can I see your mapping?
28.11.2024 14:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Isn't using byproducts and trimmings (I.e. waste) from fisheries to make more food a good thing?
28.11.2024 14:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What is the solution?
28.11.2024 14:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What do you think is the solution considering a huge demand for these products?
28.11.2024 13:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This varies with temperature and other factors. Assuming an FCR 1.5 for the sake of argument, every kilo of salmon Canadian farmed salmon only required the input of 0.18 kg of marine ingredients (1.5 x 0.12=0.18). In this way Canadian salmon farming feeds more people than the input fish could.
