It's always quite startling to me the number of men who conflate commitment with control.

Healthy commitment is active partnership. It's mutual agency. It's trust. But too many men fear abandonment, and so they think slapping a collar on someone is going to keep that person from leaving. It only ever expedites the end of a relationship.

YOU wasn't a perfect show, but its brilliance was shining a light on how the very construction of western romance is inherently flawed and encourages men to believe that true love is ownership. Even within the gay community, you see this kinda stuff all the time. "You belong to me." No, I don't.
