I said it would get worse very quickly. By tomorrow we will have completed the most dangerous & frightening 24 hours thus far of Trump 2.0. Just to name a few:
1. Defiance of a court order by sending migrants to Sudan without due process (despite clear DP decision SCOTUS) & Dist. CT. order.

This one student, Mohsen Madhawi, has more courage than the entire Republican Party, billionaires, media personalities, powerful law firms, and corporate institutions who all bent the knee to Trump.

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

I had been doubtful that we were going to have a "this is the crisis moment" with Trump, as opposed to "everything about this is a destructive catastrophe."

But the Abrego Garcia case is the crisis moment.

💥🪧Happening right now in Budapest:

🇭🇺 Anti-government protesters have occupied four bridges, opposing Viktor Orbán’s crackdown on freedom of assembly under the guise of “child protection.”

🗣️ Though aimed at the Pride march, Orbán’s law threatens banning any kind of protests or rally.

Excellence in Middle East Studies — something Cemal Kafadar and Rosie Bsheer personify— is being sacrificed at the altar because the boards of these schools wager not many people will care and it will satisfy the barbarians at the gates. They’re wrong on both counts.

Rumeysa Ozturk must not be deported. You can't kidnap someone off the street for their political views — this isn't Moscow.

She has every right to speak her mind. I've contacted the Administration. I want answers.

INTRODUCTION
Rümeysa Öztürk is an international PhD student who was arrested on March 25,
2025 when six plain-clothes federal officers surrounded her on the street just outside her home in
Somerville, MA. Rümeysa screamed as a man in a hooded sweatshirt grabbed her. Several other
officers encircled her and soon covered their faces with masks. Rümeysa was handcuffed and
escorted with an officer holding each arm into an unmarked vehicle. For more than 20 hours, her friends, family and legal counsel could not locate or contact her. After an exhaustive search, they learned that she had ultimately been removed from Massachusetts and sent more than 1,300
miles away to an ICE detention facility in Louisiana.

NEW: Rümeysa Öztürk's attorneys—now including the ACLU!—describe her arrest and detention as "part of a concerted and systemic effort by Trump administration officials to punish students and others identified with pro-Palestine activism." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The battle over Columbia has sadly given me a ton of deja vu of the Erdoğan government's takeover of Turkey's Boğaziçi University in recent years. @abuaardvark.bsky.social has nicely drawn that connection here -- and reminded us of the importance of student and faculty resistance:

ICE Arrests Pro-Palestinian Activist at Columbia Mahmoud Khalil, who recently completed a graduate program at Columbia, has legal permanent residency, his lawyer said.

The United States government just disappeared a lawful US resident because it didn't like his speech. You should care about this because it shouldn't happen to anyone, but you should also care because it could happen to you. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/09/n...
