Wardsend, with its mix of woodland and heathland and its location on the banks of a rejuvenated River Don is now a haven for wildlife in a busy city.

04.02.2025 12:03 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0A portrait of Edward Wortley Montagu above a description that reads "Edward Wortley Montagu. 1678 - 1761. Husband to Mary, who she eloped with. In 1716 Edward was made Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Alas, Edward Wasn't great at his job and he didn't stay in Adrianople (now Edirne) very long."
A portrait of Clotworthy Skeffington, who looks rather less glamorous and attractive than his love rival. 1715 - 1757. Captioned beneath: the match Mary's family intended for her, but he was spurned quite dramatically. Of poor old Clotworthy, Mary wrote "I had rather give my hand to the Flames than to him'. Ouch.
A portrait of Mary Wortley Montagu (1689 - 1762) above a caption which reads: Inoculation pioneer. Mary witnessed the impact inoculation had in Turkey and fought to bring it to England. Lady Mary didn't mind sticking out - she refused to wear wigs, took snuff, and wore elaborate Turkish dress.
Our colleagues at the History of Science Museum announced their one-act, one-actor play 'The Alleviating Act' about the fascinating #vaccine pioneer #MaryWortleyMontagu. To book: www.hsm.ox.ac.uk/event/the-al....
Aficionados of unfortunate names will be pleased to meet Clotworthy Skeffington.
