While I'm on a roll, it's common sense that musical communities primarily for amateurs of all skill levels will have way more kids and socially awkward people in them than communities that are inclusive but obviously designed for professionals. I cannot believe that's surprising to some people.

Again, I'll be the first to admit I hated having to learn this but I did it anyway because it's the only way to create and maintain an inclusive all-ages community.

This is something leaders of other communities, especially teachers, already know and try to teach us. We would do well to listen.

This sometimes means being able to be the bigger person and know how to de-escalate a situation gracefully while preserving the dignity of the person you are interacting with rather than tearing them down because they aren't behaving the way you want them to.

This is especially important in spaces that revolve around video games, because video games by nature attract a higher concentration of both kids and neuro-divergent people. Leaders of these spaces MUST be cognizant of this and behave accordingly.

Having grace for the sometimes-unexpected or off-putting interactions of one group makes it much easier to extend the same grace for similar interactions from the other.

Being kid-friendly also means being neuro-divergent friendly, because at the end of the day we're both groups of socially awkward nerds trying to navigate similar social situations.

But I can absolutely learn (and am learning!) how to at least create and maintain a community where they feel welcome and where others exist who ARE comfortable engaging with them on a personal level.
