This model lets us see how indeterminacy allows macroscopic causation and agential control to emerge. Our actions are not fully predetermined but they’re also not caused by specific random events – instead, they are genuinely *up to us*. philarchive.org/rec/POTCCA-6

Beyond Mechanismβ€”Extending Our Concepts of Causation in Neuroscience The search for neural mechanisms of behaviour often relies on a synchronic, driving view of causation, where neural activity drives more neural activity, which eventually drives behaviour. The real c....

And we can see, in creatures that developed nervous systems especially, that they can act *for reasons*, based on the meaning of neural patterns. Living systems literally incorporate knowledge about the world to guide their behavior adaptively. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Ignoring fluctuations in criterion is problematic: simulations show that criterion fluctuations induce apparent history biases (panel C), lead to underestimated psychometric slopes (panel D) and underestimated measures of sensitivity, such as d' (panel D)

So in short….ice baths must be avoided if the goal is muscle building. But, that is not the case for endurance based activities (running, football).

Might focused ultrasound one day replace DBS?

UK Scientists built a 256-panel focused ultrasound helmet that can precisely target deep brain regions. Using theta-burst TUS, they stimulated the LGN and found visual cortex activity with effects lasting up to 40 minutes.

In #memories, when does bias towards or away from a stimulus arise? New research shows that attractive serial dependence emerges during #decision-making, while repulsive biases originate during early sensory encoding. πŸ§ͺ

Is it me, or the train moving?
We use vision to maintain balance. Just close your eyes while standing on one leg and you typically feel less stable. But if we use vision, how come we do not fall when looking at a moving visual reference, e.g. a train?
