Generally quiet, interested in too many things. This weekend is when I’ll finally catch up. No, really.

This small thing that can make a big difference to how you feel is something those who wage their petty war against rainbow flags can never understand.

This heat wave is absolutely bone crushing. I'm so glad I installed central air two years ago.

But if you're without AC, or you're dealing with a heat wave for the first time because it's reaching areas that don't historically get this hot, here are a few tips from my years of poverty in a desert:

Today’s advice from your Goth Auntie
-Stop slouching, drink some water, take your meds.
-You deserve care and kindness, and you’re allowed to ask for it
-The Lurking Horror informed me that this week is for making blanket forts, nothing else.

some buds act like it is so hard to love but it is so easy. you just do nothing. in the absence of all things, we just love. it is what we are built to do. just strip off everything else, all the baggage, and love is underneath

I don't like "Your first draft will be shitty" as advice, because it's a really negative framing.

I prefer, "You have the freedom to be messy creating your first draft."

Anyone crafter knows what their room looks like mid-creation. Writers should be as free to be as exhuberent and messy.

Year Walking

Many countries have a living folk tradition of being able to see into the future at certain times of the year. In Sweden, it is known as Γ…rslΓ₯ng – year walking – and it is practised at Christmas and New Year’s Eve depending on the village. Practitioners are said to go into a deep trance where they encounter various supernatural beings who will challenge them with riddles and tasks. If successfully completed, the beings will then allow a glimpse of events that will happen in the coming year.

Strangely, the cunning folk of Hookland also use the term year walking for some forms of divination. Whether it is fairly safe to dismiss some folklorists claims that the shared names shows that the Hookland type of omen walking has clear ties to the Swedish via Danish invasions is a matter I shall not decide. There are both signifiant similarities and differences between the same named practice. For a start, year walking in Hookland is not restricted to Christmas and New Year’s Eve – dates far too arbitrary, far too tied to calendar convenience for the county’s cunning folk. The practice is also undertaken at the quarter days and other old festivals such as St. Lazarus Eve when the worlds of the living and the dead are known to rub against each other.

As in the Swedish form, the person year walking may go into a deep trance. This is often brought about by fasting and gazing at a ritual flame. While in this sublime state, the year walker may encounter spirits of the dead, Faery or the land itself. If they can prove themselves worthy, they may walk into the coming future of themselves, another or even their whole community. However, in contrast to the Swedish version, Hookland year walking more often involves the actual feet. Practitioners will usually make a midnight pilgrimage to some distant sacred spot with an expectation of meeting any supernatural beings in the flesh rather than the fancy.

What the cunning folk of Hookland do on #NewYearsEve - year-walking. May your troubles not cross the threshold of midnight. May blessings walk down the lane to meet you in the coming year.

So far I tend to agree with this. Bluesky's corporate aims and goals are different than the user expectation for it, and no one company will make 23 million users 100% happy 100% of the time. But they've been good at communication and in giving users tools to create their own space. Tricky stuff.

Happy shopping season! It's time for the annual superthread of #artists and #crafter #stores. If you make and sell your own stuff, please tell us about it and leave links!

Tip: photos with good alt-text descriptions can help sell products so go bananas with what you do and how you do it.
