Random thing, but I did not know that we owe 'jaywalking' to the wonderful auto-industry.

Apparently it's from early 20th century US. The car industry used it to blame pedestrians for accidents (a jay was a cluelessly bumkin, so the accident is their fault, not the car/driver's...)
