Also, always get a modular PSU. Not for cable management, but to make it easier to remove when you inevitably drop a M.2 screw in it.

Time-saving tip: never buy a motherboard where what ports/slots work are conditional on what other slots/ports are in use. You will forget when you try to add something later.

If the US can ever vomit this stupid era out we're gonna need widespread all-ages education on basic facts like when you'd see old billboards or MST3k shorts advertising the concept of hand washing or being good. Stop Using Gasoline To Wash Clothes. Springs Are Ubiquitous & Essential To Modern Life

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc

and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way

Add another unpaid cost that using fossil fuels imposes on us.

Odds the folks who are worried about birth rates will care? Zero.

The image presents a comparison of the leading causes of death in the United States for 2023 and the media coverage these causes receive from three news outlets: The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Fox News.

In the footer, it notes the data sources, indicating that the information is based on media mentions from Media Cloud (2025) and death data from the US CDC (2025) and the Global Terrorism Index, with a clarification that values are normalized to sum to 100%.

Does the news reflect what we die from?

[Thread] Following along with the NE US weekend forecast & wondering why models are all over the place with the nor'easter?

Here's a good place to start: notice how a potent cutoff low in the 12z ECMWF is completely missing in the following 18z ECMWF run - only 96 hours out!

I got mine a few weeks ago, they were letting folks add covid on site since there was a lot of confusion at scheduling time (before Evers and the state dept declared that everyone should be covered)

Does anyone have a lightweight alternative for Toggl? I don't really care about sync to the web, and I don't need to lose half a gig of RAM to a timer.

My sense is that the press has so deeply absorbed the idea of "just present the facts, lest you be accused of bias" that it's getting in the way of the whole purpose of journalism, which is to help your readership understand the world.

Chart showing the accumulation of chill hours.

Chart showing the accumulation of chill hours.

New tool alert! Hopefully this gets us thinking about the cool weather that we're still waiting to arrive.

Chill Hours: the accumulation of hours from October 1 - February 28/29 that have a temperature between 32Β°F and 45Β°F.

Each fruit crop has a required number of chill hours to fruit properly.

I've got co-workers/collaborators with the names of "Tim" and "Duncan", and sometimes the order in which their names show up in emails thread gets me really excited for a second before I realize I'm not about to hear from a hall of famer.

A chart of "Major concerns of PhD candidates." The top text says, "Financial pressures top the list of concerns faced by PhD candidates, but concerns differ among the sexes. Those studying in the United States rank the political landscape as their main worry." The chart shows that in the full survey, political landscape is the biggest concern for about 20% of students (a bit higher for women than men) but there's an annotation saying "In US PhD students, this rose to 64%". Overall, the highest-rated concern was financial pressures at around 40%.
