Counseling Communism will plan to meet monthly on the 3rd Sunday at 6:30pm EST, with a few extra movie nights thrown in. We plan to meet on Zoom, same link every month. We will start off with Donna Harraway's "A Cyborg Manifesto" in January, before covering Wilhelm Reich's "The Mass Psychology of Fascism" in four sessions from February through May. After that we'll read James Boggs' "The American Revolution" in June, and then spend two sessions covering Samuel Chambers' "Money Has No Value" in July and August.

I sympathize with Serge a lot, based off this book. He was committed. He tried to blend Marxism & anarchism as do all my favorites from both traditions. He was a bold intractable militant & bandit & guard of his own soul. It’s a shame that he hitched his wagon to a force that could only destroy him.

He spent the Revolution trashing every anti-Bolsh anarchist group only to be fed to the same terrible machine he saw so many of his former friends get mulched by. His attempt to bind to the trots fared no better. He left anarchism only to find there was no room in the House of Lenin for anarchists.

As a leninist anarchist, I think he’s really a tragic figure. He clearly felt strongly that a political home was found, and he tried to show how Ⓐ could find its place in the Party, could mature past its failings. His case would have been more compelling if he wasn’t proven incorrect at every turn

I’m not surprised that it was hard to maintain those old commitments through prison, but as with many of the Leninists who claim an anarchist phase, he didn’t strike me as a particularly rigorous or theoretically grounded anarchist. He was motivated by elan, & elan is hard to maintain in the clink.

Early Serge strikes me as having many of the weaknesses (and, to be fair, the strengths) of the individualists for me. Great at asking important questions, light on satisfying answers, more poetry than politics. A hothead’s hothead.

The chronological path through his writings on anarchism shows him go from an illegalist bashing the anarchist-communists, to prison, cut off from everyone, to a leninist bashing the anarchist-communists.

He’s got a voice, so I’m definitely interested in reading his novels, but he’s kind of representative of two types on the left that both inspires and bugs me: the guy willing to go it alone and the guy who always thinks he knows better than everyone else.

Just finished reading “Anarchists Never Surrender” by Victor Serge, and it’s a very interesting little book. Serge is a fascinating guy, an anarchist individualist turned Bolshevik turned Trotskyist turned libertarian socialist, he feels very relatable and maddening in equal parts.
