New findings from my lab in Nature Communications suggest that racial stereotypes can lead the brain's perceptual system to temporarily "see" weapons where they don't exist.

πŸ§ͺ Translation for NSF folks:

Yesterday's SCOTUS decision will likely soon result in these previously blocked actions:

-elimination of NSF divisions as an org unit

-closing Division of Equity for Excellence in STEM, firing its staff

Can still be challenged in court (see below). But still 🀯🀯🀯

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

I’m thrilled to share my new paper on impression formation & updating in @natrevpsychol.nature.com!

In it, I argue that impression formation is fundamentally a learning process. And as such, theories of impression formation should be based on mechanisms of learning and memory.

Some key take-aways:

I Found a Significant Indirect Effect, But My Total Effect Is Not Significant! What Do I Do? This question comes up a lotβ€”via email, in workshops, at conferences. You've run a mediation analysis and found a significant indirect effect, but your total effect isn't statistically significant. No...

I get this question a lot via email and in class, so I thought I'd write a blog. I don't think the ideas are novel, but rather just synthesizing what others in the field have wrote. Hopefully it's helpful to others (i.e., a quicker read than some of the papers). www.akmontoya.com/post/i-found...

Video of a baby on its parent's chest looking at the parent's face and smiling.

When you see this image, does it make you wonder what that baby is thinking. Do you think the baby is merely perceiving a set of shapes or do you think that the baby is also inferring meaning from the face they are looking at? (1/5)

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Reviewer notes: That’s a very nice mediation analysis you have there. It would be a shame if something happened to it. Mediation analysis has gotten a lot of flak, including classic titles such as β€œYes, but what’s the mechanism? Two new papers led by Iris Traast!

In both, we ask how an interaction partner’s race affects impression formation via instrumental learningβ€”that is, based on interaction choices and partner feedback.

We tested this in the USA (Black vs. White; in JEPG) and the NL (White vs. Moroccan; in GPIR).

Under Pressure, Psychology Accreditation Board Suspends Diversity Standards As the Trump administration threatens to strip accrediting bodies of their power, many are scrambling to purge diversity requirements.

Extremely disappointing & cowardly. The American Psychological Association is rescinding diversity requirements. Not due to any actual mandate from the federal government, but only because it may *someday* face pressure from the government www.nytimes.com/2025/03/27/h...
