Why Itโ€™s Important to Talk about Race with Children Children start learning about race and racism as early as preschool. Talking about race early, however difficult, will help them become more antiracist

"White parents who see themselves as egalitarian must recognize that the stakes are now higher than ever. If you want to raise children who reject racism rather than passively absorbing it, right now, today, talk with your child about race and racism."

State Rep. Gregory W. Porter (D-Indianapolis) released the following statement:

โ€œThe active intervention to end or attack anything in the budget that gives state dollars to people of color is sickening. I wonโ€™t mince my words: Itโ€™s racist. Black Hoosiers and other minorities pay taxes, so we deserve to benefit from the state budget as much as our white counterparts.

โ€œMartin University is Indianaโ€™s only predominately Black institution. The only reason why itโ€™s not an official HBCU is because itโ€™s relatively young. Now they will receive zero state dollars, which is a complete cut from 2023. He also cut the College Success Program, which encourages minority and first-generation, low-income students to attend college. That means a total of $10 million in support for minority students has been eliminated."

Indiana isn't as big as Texas or Florida, but for those of us in higher education, it's worth paying attention to what is (and has been) going on. Take the Governor's new budget, which cut all of the $10M previously allocated to Martin University, the only predominantly Black school in the state.
