These results show who is more likely to report discrimination which could possibly lead to a breakdown in trust. Better data, especially with more granular racial groups, can sharpen that picture and guide change. Consequences of discrimination are important (come to my dissertation defense)

Generalized linear mixed model results from JGIM article

Generalized linear mixed model results from JGIM article

We analyzed 12 years of Health and Retirement Study data. Black adults in middle age were more likely than White adults to report discrimination, that gap narrowed later. Reports were also higher among people who were uninsured, had depressive symptoms, arthritis, more doctor visits, or higher BMI.

I grew up hearing relatives describe feeling brushed off in clinics and spoken to like their concerns were a nuisance. Those stories pushed me toward a PhD in Population Health Sciences and my 1st project on discrimination in healthcare. @journalgim.bsky.social

This is an issue that I increasingly struggle with as we synthesize evidence for Project AIM. While it might seem easy to reliably identify fraudulent papers published by predatory publishers, I have not yet found clear criteria that reliably distinguish predatory from legitimate papers. 1/

Yes! Especially with issues with indexing through search, some new journals from serious publishers might lag in indexing, but if you want to include other papers outside of the main search databases, you sort through a lot of nonsense.

Then you have to go through the rabbit hole of โ€œno I paid the Open Access fee at _____ journal and trust the review process there more than at a paper mills publisher.โ€ Surface level it sounds ridiculous because a good study (should) be a good study, but slop makes it harder to find serious work!

Impacts multiple levels. HS parents trying to get their kids to be more competitive for college admissions, undergrad students for med and grad school, med students for residency. Also muddies science b/c people might mistake an unreviewed cash grab (from the โ€œpublishers) as foundational โ€œevidenceโ€

Important reporting @carlzimmer.com

Upon 1st glance most scientists should be able to distinguish a predatory journal/opportunity. Our incentive structure allows these paper mills to prey on people who are going after increasingly competitive opportunities.

Health Equity Impact Report Read about the Associationโ€™s work aimed at achieving health equity in dementia care, and ensuring all communities have an opportunity for early diagnosis and access to risk reduction and quality care.

At the Alzheimerโ€™s Association, we believe that engaging diverse perspectives is critical to achieving health equity. All communities should have a fair and just opportunity for early diagnosis and access to risk reduction and quality care. alz.org/healthequityreport #ENDALZ

Importantly current actions will lead to more desperation! Marketing campaigns centered on innovation in this moment without acknowledging how the past innovation did not reach people is a non-starter for me. Some complaints are out of bad faith but many are grounded in lived experience

Many of our flagship institutions create a ton of prosperity for their alumni and are engines of economic activity in their areas, yet there are large groups of the people who benefit from said activity who are comfortable seeing them collapse. Misinformed? Probably! But the desperation is thereโ€ฆ

This moment is incredibly tough, but Iโ€™m curious about the future vision that can be made to promote solutions where people understand and feel the tangible impact of our work. Silent success does not mean it doesnโ€™t exist, but the feeling of exclusion and deprivation has set in so many places.

Rewatched the movie โ€œCaptain Phillipsโ€ and thinking about this moment in academia. After finishing I had sympathy for the pirates b/c it was clear that they were desperate. Many people cheering on the shakedown of academia are coming from a place of desperation and deprivation (different level)

Agreed, Iโ€™ve heard of some journals who request authors share AI prompts for any part of writing where it was used to assist the process. I understand the intent, but what does this accomplish if open science practices like data sharing arenโ€™t enforced as well. The content of the paper matters!

Really enjoyed this piece! Communicating in the places where people are getting their information feels like it should be a core competency for impact, especially now. To do that, we need to encourage dialogue in โ€œnew mediaโ€ spaces and train people on how to use them effectively!

Training Health Communicators โ€” The Need for a New Approach | NEJM To prevent the spread of inaccurate information, academic and health care institutions will need to equip scientists and clinicians to engage effectively on nontraditional media platforms.
