These results show who is more likely to report discrimination which could possibly lead to a breakdown in trust. Better data, especially with more granular racial groups, can sharpen that picture and guide change. Consequences of discrimination are important (come to my dissertation defense)

We analyzed 12 years of Health and Retirement Study data. Black adults in middle age were more likely than White adults to report discrimination, that gap narrowed later. Reports were also higher among people who were uninsured, had depressive symptoms, arthritis, more doctor visits, or higher BMI.

BREAKING: Watchdog government agency finds the NIH and the Trump administration have illegally withheld funds in violation of the Impoundment Control Act, and rips into HHS for failing to justify its slow-walking of funds.

Across three studies, we show that communicating the economic impact of NIH funding cutsโespecially with interactive quizzes and mapsโdecreases approval and motivates action to oppose the cuts, across the political spectrum. ๐งต 1/8

While it might seem easy to reliably identify fraudulent papers published by predatory publishers, I have not yet found clear criteria that reliably distinguish predatory from legitimate papers. 1/

Yes! Especially with issues with indexing through search, some new journals from serious publishers might lag in indexing, but if you want to include other papers outside of the main search databases, you sort through a lot of nonsense.
Then you have to go through the rabbit hole of โno I paid the Open Access fee at _____ journal and trust the review process there more than at a paper mills publisher.โ Surface level it sounds ridiculous because a good study (should) be a good study, but slop makes it harder to find serious work!

Upon 1st glance most scientists should be able to distinguish a predatory journal/opportunity. Our incentive structure allows these paper mills to prey on people who are going after increasingly competitive opportunities.

04.08.2025 19:22 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Importantly current actions will lead to more desperation! Marketing campaigns centered on innovation in this moment without acknowledging how the past innovation did not reach people is a non-starter for me. Some complaints are out of bad faith but many are grounded in lived experience
04.08.2025 18:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Many of our flagship institutions create a ton of prosperity for their alumni and are engines of economic activity in their areas, yet there are large groups of the people who benefit from said activity who are comfortable seeing them collapse. 04.08.2025 18:56 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This moment is incredibly tough, but Iโm curious about the future vision that can be made to promote solutions where people understand and feel the tangible impact of our work. Silent success does not mean it doesnโt exist, but the feeling of exclusion and deprivation has set in so many places.
04.08.2025 18:46 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Rewatched the movie โCaptain Phillipsโ and thinking about this moment in academia. 04.08.2025 18:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1Agreed, Iโve heard of some journals who request authors share AI prompts for any part of writing where it was used to assist the process.
