True of extracurricular activities more broadly as well-- a marker of "accomplishment" that isn't just about academics, but typically requires substantial time and/or financial resources from families to support it.

With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

Thanks to James McCarthy who it seems must have bothered their line manager enough to say "guys, maybe this should be reported?" Which it now has been, a day later.

In the past 3 weeks, how many hours did state and district leaders spend frantically re-arranging budgets, contracts, and staffing plans to address the budget uncertainty? Did that improve student outcomes?

What a ridiculous waste of scarce resources.

The administration & their useful idiots say editors & peer reviewers are gatekeepers with an agenda. As @jeremyberg.bsky.social’s shows, the only agenda is scientific integrity.

There is no substitute for a fair, evidence-driven, informed approach to editorial decisions.

Heard from #AHRQ that the entire grants staff has been let go! They are unable to issue funds for grants already funded, let alone fund new grants. This is outrageous and will make Americans poorer and sicker. Why? A brief thread about just some recent AHRQ-funded research: #MedSky #HealthPolicy

I’m no political strategist but if Trump wants to distract us from the Epstein Files, he could try fully funding NIH, EPA, NASA, NOAA, NSF, USDA, USGS, etc. We’d be so shocked that we won’t stop talking about it for months.

There’s not enough reporting, IMHO, on the targeted attacks on research and science across multiple fields: education, health, medicine, environment. Presumably, if they are killing the reporting and accountability mechanisms, they know what they’re doing will have negative consequences.

🚨 New update on threats to funding for STEM education and training of future scientists πŸ§ͺ

In past week, early signs from Congress are: "we don't want to destroy NSF".

However, STEM education and trainingβ€”which are vital to NSF's missionβ€”remain particularly targeted.

Absolutely essential time to build stronger infrastructures across states for education data, evidence use, research production, and brokerage/networking across all of them. Would love to see this span K-16+, and potentially also out-of-school supports and learning opportunities.

We need to be really clear about what the role of USED is, b/c the majority of public education decisions are at the state and local level. USED is about enforcement of students' civil rights and supplemental funding to assure a baseline of education for all students. 1/x @johnpavlovitz.bsky.social

Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities The move would undo years of work, leaving advisory councils understaffed, and without the full expertise needed for reviews.

NEW: In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant funding.

NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and told to expect placements by political appointees.

Most deaf and hard of hearing kids are at risk of a condition called language deprivation. Almost all are born to hearing families who don’t know a sign language, and even with hearing aids or cochlear implants and speech therapy, many kids don’t get enough access to spoken language early on.
