PhD student Ali Mohamed is out on the R/V Neil Armstrong right now collecting high-frequency seismic data in our study area around the Cape Fear Slide offshore North Carolina. Here he is on our 2023 Langseth cruise launching an XBT, and a photo he took of the Armstrong. Watch out for hurricanes Ali!

I get that this is an Elder Millennial thing but I just want to turn on PBS at 6 pm and hear “Good evening, I’m Jim Lehrer” with the original trumpet theme and know that everything is under control. That’s what the post-9/11 years were like for those of you too young to remember.

I’ve stayed there twice! Love it. The breakfast place is fire and the Italian restaurant down the block is good.

China: leader in renewable deployment, but powers much of the world’s consumer commerce, so not responsible for all decarb; phasing out coal and top dog for e-vehicle uptake; very generous tax incentives benefit domestic industry AND air quality improvements. 4/x

Saudi Arabia: very interesting- admittedly dependent on oil and gas, so seeks to develop circular economy including e-fuels with carbon utilization. Net zero electricity by 2030. 3/x

Iceland: electricity is mostly carbon-free but will close their only coal plant soon. Fishing and transportation will be electrified- presumably by geothermal. Leader in CCS. 2/x

If you’re not an expert in something that you’re reviewing, try to look it up first! I don’t need to explain to you in my paper a routine analytical method that’s been used for 60 years. Recognize the limits of your knowledge. 4/5

Don’t send in your review as an annotated PDF. It encourages laziness. You’re not a coauthor and you’re not my advisor. I had to respond to the same comment multiple times including obvious instances where the reviewer had come back a few days later and forgotten what they’d read! 3/5

I’ve published >120 peer-reviewed articles, reviewed nearly 400 articles myself, and shepherded hundreds through the process as AE over the years. I‘m not trying to flex but please listen to my thoughts! 2/5
