04.02.2026 06:47 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A painting by Max Ernst depicting a face-like presence near the centre of the canvas - executed primarily in blues and greens - surrounded by a complex pattern of thin, curving black lines, some with small, dark, basic shapes attached to them.

03.02.2026 02:57 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm pretty unknowledgeable about the vast TTRPGs there--do any of them go farther mutability wise than "players/participants vote to decide what happens"?
03.02.2026 06:28 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Love this post because it is so completely the opposite of my experience, I'm amazed. Its wild that you experience the world this way.
Maybe something like a pointcrawl might be easier? I guess it depends on which parts are the boring ones.
My dreams of a Nomic - D&D hybrid are closer than I thought.
02.02.2026 11:08 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I understand the point that good mechanics are hard to make, and if you're intent on having the "best mechanics" I guess at the table is a bad time to do them.
BUT they're also fun to make, that's part of the artform, isn't it? The fun is getting to try out a thing and see how it goes.
This discussion of OSR is really interesting, there are lots of good points, but I'm intrigued by this insistence that "game design on the fly" is inherently improper or outside of the story of the game being played.
Nomic is a game where the whole story of the game is "game design." Why not rpgs?
Mechanics are these amazing little mental machines - little bits of text that run in your brain and use random numbers or tokens or points or whatever to generate story. They are NOT the enemy! They're your lever, your wrench, your fulcrum, your inclined plane, everything you need to tell a story!
23.01.2026 01:49 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0this is what incenses me, like, please...fuckin...play literally any other game I am begging you osr types
i call the osr a mind virus created by satan to destroy TTRPGs as an art form and I'm not joking, it has destroyed one or two generations of talent completely
clear scope
Not that OSR is always good at that
I... May have made a mistake.
02.02.2026 09:49 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I enjoy that the reason there are so many random castles in the wilderness in OD&D is for tax avoidance
16.01.2026 17:52 โ ๐ 22 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I enjoy the deterministic procedures in OD&D, something that has been lost in favour of stochastic elements. Knowing that a wizard will put a geas on a party if they can't pay up gives a heap of concrete info about how the game world operates

02.02.2026 09:10 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0best D&D I've played was when the only notes I had access to were a picture of the dungeon map on my flip phone
02.02.2026 08:52 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0does anyone else hate making maps for dnd? I Especially hate making dungeon maps, shit is fucking MISERABLY boring and also really difficult
11.01.2026 03:55 โ ๐ 31 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 18 ๐ 1We're making dungeon poems now y'all. Just the barest hint of dungeon with no maps or tables, sorry, but also not sorry.

It's a pocketmod, it's pages for screen-viewing, it makes sense? No scratch that last one. There is birdsong down there in the Earth.
This rules.
