The Insatiable Appetite for RAM is Threatening to Consume the Gaming Market RAM provider Micron recently decided to leave the consumer space. Experts tell us about the effect this will have on gaming.

Wondering why everyone is suddenly talking about RAM? What's the big deal?

@patrickdane.bsky.social speaks to analysts and hardware experts like @matpiscatella.bsky.social, @superhys.bsky.social, and Daniel Owen to outline why RAM prices are skyrocketing, and what this means for videogames.

I'm currently writing a one shot for my DnD group, and I've devised what I think is a relatively simple puzzle/riddle, but just want to check to see if the logic works.

Anyone willing to be a guinea pig, and try to solve my dastardly (shouldn't be too hard) puzzle?

Is this a Groundhog situtation where a good Wellington brings tidings of a better year?

I had been loosely following RAM shortages, but Micron leaving the consumer market made me take a deeper look at what's happening.

If you're like me, and had filed away as 'a thing that is happening', it's worth starting to take a look, because this is getting pretty bad, pretty quick.

Gears of War 2 was basically a gaming awakening for me, and remains the high point of an under appreciated series.

Keep your fancy Mirrors Edges and MGS 4s. Chainsaw on a assault rifle clears everytime.

I was thinking a month or two ago that Vince is up there with the absolute greats in terms of impact in the gaming industry. Just an enormous presence, and often, not recognised enough.

Horrible. RIP. Thoughts are with his family.

Reject 'I can fix them'

Embrace 'I'll let them make me worse.'

I’m geeked up on that pure Na’vi yayo while an eight foot tall goth cat gf cuts me. I’m high off that Pandora Payakan talking directly to the ancestors. We sipping pure Tulkun brain goo. That Mangkwan coochie got me waging war on Eywa. I’ve died. I will die again. This shit ain’t nothing to me man.

The best thing about Avatar is how unashamedly weird it is. Its lore and the bio-psychodelic fixation is ripped from some back-of-the-library 1970s sci-fi book, but its the biggest film franchise in the world.

One day a therapist will psychoanalyse why I'm currently playing three "monster" women, and why I'm so drawn to the archetype, but that is not this day.

I fucking love DnD man. Tonight, I played a blood-obsessed sanguine fish-woman sorcerer, who was loving being in chaos, her health yo-yoing back and forth, giggling while in the middle of chaos the whole time. It's sometimes nice to finish work and become a gremlin shark woman for 4 hours, you know?

Once went to dinner with one of the writers on a Halo. I started saying I was working on a script for something, and they said "thats amazing, please dont tell me anything."

Took me sec but realised its because if something showed up in a game I deemed similar, it opens up a lot of potential grief.

I spoke to a dozen professional concept artists working in games about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs easier, even if it's just used in "very early ideation stages."

Zero said "yes." Most said it made their job harder.

I learnt a lot about concept artists. You should too!

I've been helping out at The Guardian's games team this year with edits and other support - thanks @mackeza.bsky.social for the opportunity, and to the (brilliant) freelancers I've worked with these past few months.

A reminder if any sites in 2026 need an additional editor during busy periods, HMU!

I think another factor is that I don't think the use is entirely driven by the CEO and Execs, which is a nice, clean narrative - but that some developers are willingly using it of their own accord, which is where conversations will get muddier.

17.12.2025 09:26 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah. As I understand, it's prevalent already for games of a certain scale, and I think if people are hoping their favorite developer doesn't, they may find the horse has already bolted.

But I think there is still good in keeping the stove hot to create consideration, and curb the worst impulses.

17.12.2025 09:19 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Hell, there's been credible allegations of its use uncovered at AAA developers in the last couple of weeks and the companies have just not commented. The tech introduces enough uncertainty that it becomes hard to talk about instences as absolute fact which is in a developer's favor - fog of war etc.

17.12.2025 01:42 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

I think there is an underestimation of the prevalence of the use of AI in game development. The tech scares me for so many reasons, and the push back is necessary - but I fear that today's conversation isn't going to dissuade the techs implementation, but rather the transparency of its use.

Quantic Dream's MOBA Works in Theory β€” But First It Needs to Work Technically Quantic Dream's competitive MOBA Spellcasters Chronicles recently held a beta. Has the narrative-driven studio bitten off too much?

Quantic Dream, a studio known for its single-player, cinematic narrative titles, is making a competitive MOBA. That's odd.

@patrickdane.bsky.social went into a recent playtest to discover that, surprisingly, there are some pretty neat ideas. But it still has some significant hurdles to overcome.

There's something to Spellcasters Chronicles. It's a nice idea and interesting in the ways it differs to other MOBAs. Looks amazing too - but man, it needs to sort out it's technical issues. It simply needs less RAM demand, because asking a minimum of 32GB is insane.
