11.08.2025 23:42 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've been re-reading ANCILLARY JUSTICE and it's great of course (I think I'm getting even more out of the way it plays with identity, et al, than I did on my first few reads) but also, my goodness, the word "annexation" is provoking a little bit more of an emotional response these days π
11.08.2025 23:30 β π 15 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oh hey, I'm Canadian and I write poetry sometimes.
11.08.2025 23:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I posted this because sometimes ppl say things like "no one reads anymore" or "books don't sell", etc
but ppl often say these things with little or no -actual- information, nor understanding of what those words mean (i.e. the contexts in which some people say them)
so: here's some information!β€οΈβπ₯
Listen, my upcoming novel that's slated for a 2026 release has scenes about - among other things - minors being banned from reading the full/uncensored versions of the dictionary and encyclopedia.
I was really hoping that by 2026 it would still be science fiction, you know?

09.08.2025 00:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's the same as point 2 I think? π
07.08.2025 13:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0okay um let's see
1) Sapphic & autistic readers love the sapphic & autistic rep
2) A famous editor once told me I was "so good at characters"
3) um
um
π
um... I can turn revisions in pretty quick???
This is a correct response.
06.08.2025 19:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah, like if you're writing characters who are of the right generation / social context / subculture to say "unalive," then go ahead and have them say "unalive." Regardless of its origins, it is a word some people actually say.
06.08.2025 19:12 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For obvious reasons it helps if these are flash science fiction stories that are freely available online.
Bonus points if they are specifically extrapolating how a present tech might change society in, oh, say, the next 20 years.
(Double bonus points if the tech is AI - not necessarily genAI.)
So, I'm designing an assignment where my students write flash fiction. It's not a creative writing course, but I want them to practice speculating about tech's future consequences.
I'd love to give them a few examples of how to do this really well at flash length. Got any near-future flash SF recs?
Yeah, probably. :D
05.08.2025 11:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ev wrote the horoscopes today, I see. (But also, big mood.)
04.08.2025 20:38 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Omg I feel this question so hard.
03.08.2025 16:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Fun fact: tomorrow is a holiday in Canada, but we didn't bother to give it a name, so in many provinces it's literally just "Civic Holiday"
03.08.2025 11:02 β π 27 π 2 π¬ 2 π 0sameeeee lol
01.08.2025 17:24 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Like, good news: we removed the sex, violence, polygamy, and adultery! Bad news: all the women involved in this story have been objectified so hard that they are now literally collectible rubber ducks. π
01.08.2025 17:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0"King George and the Ducky" is still one of my favorite examples of bowlderization ever.
01.08.2025 17:14 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Publishing hot take: traditional publishing is really hard, and self-publishing is really hard, and everyone deserves a sandwich and a nap.
31.07.2025 19:53 β π 833 π 190 π¬ 17 π 13One of the best articles about this that I've seen so far. (I happen to think that porn deserves to exist, but the article gives good examples of how the ban has also wildly overreached and affected books & games that aren't sexual at all. Disproportionately queer ones, as usual.)
31.07.2025 12:49 β π 15 π 5 π¬ 1 π 0I am not generally of the belief that sex scenes need to be "important to the story" to exist, but if they're SO unimportant that you can happily release the whole book without any of them, then...?
30.07.2025 18:45 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0At work today I announced that I had done a "hatchet job" (because I felt like I was cutting the PowerPoint slides up crudely with a hatchet to make them short enough) but uhhhh it turns out that is not actually what "hatchet job" means
30.07.2025 15:37 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Exactly.
28.07.2025 17:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wow, that one is still going, huh!
(Which - how cool, but also how sad because it has been literally five and a half years and we are STILL IN THE TRAUMATIC TIMES >___< )
Hello, I am an autistic character from a television show. I am like 30 or 40 and have become very accomplished in a STEM career which has somehow never required me to learn any basic social concepts. But don't worry, I have no sensory needs, just mean/blunt/clueless dialogue you can laugh at.
28.07.2025 12:08 β π 69 π 10 π¬ 2 π 5Okay, I'm going to just say this:
One of the worst parts of my trauma was being made to feel that what had happened to me was unspeakable
&, therefore, that *I* was unspeakable.

26.07.2025 21:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Every time I see the words "romance scam" in a headline, I think for half a second that it's some skullduggery related to romance book publishing. And then I'm like, "wait."
