Which is uhhh not always great for my stress levels when the other team is the US

I noticed this when I tried watching wheelchair sports at Paris too, but being emotionally invested in one of these team-y, "get the ball in the net" sports is completely different from other types of sports. There's so much more of a sense that the other team is a threat to defend against.

I have lost count already of how many Olympics things have made me full on ugly cry, but Lindsey Vonn's awful ski crash was one, and Gilles & Porier's heartbreakingly beautiful free dance was another.

OMG and the Spanish team with their Dune dance. Totally otherworldly.

Ok but the Czech ice dance team with their Matrix routine where they're slo mo dodging each other like bullets 🤩

Watching Nordic combined now and hearing the commentators talk about the history of this sport and, honestly, why do we not have a sci fi movie where ice planet heroes fight the evil space empire across hostile mountain terrain on rocket skis. Luke Skywalker on Hoth could never.

Actually I am not sure where curling and boccia fit into this hierarchy but I'm gonna say they are a weird type of category 2

(Any sport ending with -athlon is obviously a combination sport that can include more than one category at once)

Like,

1: Literally (but nonlethally) fight your opponent
2: Maneuver a small object past your opponent's defenses
3: Race your opponent
4: Do a simple, objectively measurable thing better than your opponent
5: Do cooler stunts than your opponent

Speaking of nationalism, I have decided that all Olympic sports (summer & winter) can be classified into a few categories based on how far they have been abstracted away from actual war.

I am also 2 days delayed in my viewing due to work, travel, and my stubborn insistence on watching everything that interests me in chronological order, but: my goodness, that men's figure skating short program! SO much fun.

One of the little things I really like about CBC's Olympics coverage is that a bunch of the ads have Paralympians in them too.
