I've been re-reading ANCILLARY JUSTICE and it's great of course (I think I'm getting even more out of the way it plays with identity, et al, than I did on my first few reads) but also, my goodness, the word "annexation" is provoking a little bit more of an emotional response these days 😅

but ppl often say these things with little or no -actual- information, nor understanding of what those words mean (i.e. the contexts in which some people say them)

Listen, my upcoming novel that's slated for a 2026 release has scenes about - among other things - minors being banned from reading the full/uncensored versions of the dictionary and encyclopedia.

I was really hoping that by 2026 it would still be science fiction, you know?

This is a correct response.

Yeah, like if you're writing characters who are of the right generation / social context / subculture to say "unalive," then go ahead and have them say "unalive." Regardless of its origins, it is a word some people actually say.

For obvious reasons it helps if these are flash science fiction stories that are freely available online.

Bonus points if they are specifically extrapolating how a present tech might change society in, oh, say, the next 20 years.

(Double bonus points if the tech is AI - not necessarily genAI.)

So, I'm designing an assignment where my students write flash fiction. It's not a creative writing course, but I want them to practice speculating about tech's future consequences.

I'd love to give them a few examples of how to do this really well at flash length. Got any near-future flash SF recs?

Publishing hot take: traditional publishing is really hard, and self-publishing is really hard, and everyone deserves a sandwich and a nap.

Hello, I am an autistic character from a television show. I am like 30 or 40 and have become very accomplished in a STEM career which has somehow never required me to learn any basic social concepts. But don't worry, I have no sensory needs, just mean/blunt/clueless dialogue you can laugh at.
