The Crucial Ingredient Your Story May Be Missing | Jane Friedman If you’re hearing that your story lacks structure or impact, you might be missing the interconnected cohesion of plot, stakes, and character.

Love this: "Story is more than just the sum of its parts; as with music it’s the symphony of how all these elements work together." janefriedman.com/the-crucial-... #Writing #Editing

Types of unreliable narrators:

- The Deceiver (they're lying on purpose)
- The Delusioned (they're lying to themselves or unaware of their own bias)
- The Naive (they're lacking information, innocent, or mentally unwell)
- The Storyteller (they like to spin a good yarn, facts be damned)

Do yourself a favour and perfect the art of the DNF. There're too many amazing books out there to use up your time on something you're not enjoying.

Resources for Writers, Part 5: Software

I only have one item to "list" here, and it's Scrivener. It's my favourite writing app, simply because of how you can organize all the pages and resources of your project in one place.

When should your narrator not be the same person as the main character (MC)?
- When you want to create distance between the reader and your MC.
- When you want to hide information that the MC knows.
- When your protagonist is a character who wouldn't tell their story in an engaging way.

There are lots of ways to learn how to improve your craft. Hiring an editor is one of them if you have the $$. It can be really helpful because you're getting precise feedback on your work. But if that's not something you can or want to do, there are other ways to level up your writing. 3/3

02.02.2026 22:29 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Treat it as a exercise so you can try to apply what you've learned to your next story. Similarly, if you think your prose needs work at a line level, you could hire a line or copy editor. 2/3

02.02.2026 22:29 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You don't need to hire an editor for that; you could probably get by with a few beta readers. It really depends on your goals and budget, though. If you feel like your story needs work structurally, hiring a dev editor is one way to improve that. 1/3
