The more clear the goal, the less meetings it takes to work toward it.

I see grocery/takeout shaming discourse going around again, so this is your periodic historian reminder that cooking from scratch daily while working has never been sustainable, and for millennia everyone either relied on takeout & restaurants or ate in huge households w/ big dorm-like group dining.

Way back in like 2008 I was That Guy that cornered Guido at a PyCon to extol the virtues of greenlets and stackless over the coroutine and generator based concurrency models that were popular at the time…
…and while I cringe thinking back on my behavior, I stand by my assessment. πŸ˜… (Guido was kind!)

I’m not too familiar with MCP but it seems just stateful enough to warrant a long lived service instead of a one-shot process per request.

Really easy to containerize each request too. Love this model.

I really like CGI style for plugins too: parameters in env vars, stream the body on stdin, read stdout for results. CNI uses this to great success so we copied the style for 2 other plugin systems in Nomad.

Go Cryptography Security Audit Go's cryptography libraries underwent an audit by Trail of Bits. Read more about the scope and results.

Three Trail of Bits engineers audited core Go cryptography for a month and found only one low-sev security issue... in unsupported Go+BoringCrypto! 🍾

Years of efforts on testing, limiting complexity, safe APIs, and readability have paid off! ✨

Yes I am taking a victory lap. No I am not sorry. πŸ†

The term 'rune' for a Unicode code point was coined by Ken Thompson during a discussion we had to find a concise name to supplement 'char' for bytes.

The Plan 9 C source files /sys/src/libc/port/*rune* appeared in the daily backup on Dec 9, 1991, so the name was coined on the evening of the 8th.

Costco is a really popular subject for business-success case studies but I feel like business guys kinda lose interest when the upshot of the study is like "just operate with scrupulous integrity in all facets and levels of your business for four decades" and not some easy-to-fix gimmick

Just discovered macOS can't control the volume of headphones/speakers plugged into my USBC monitor. Works flawlessly in Linux, but evidently you need a 3rd party app in macOS? πŸ€”

2. Gnome beats macOS as a GUI. πŸ˜…

I'm biased, but Mac window management is a mess, and I'm not even a tiling WM user! Mac's Dock is packed with icons by default. Contacts gets a shortcut by default! Even Mac's systray is cluttered vs Gnome.

Nothing big, but I'm surprised by the lack of polish.

1. Apple hardware is unbeatable. PC makers should be embarrassed. From the chassis to the unexpectedly satisfying trackpad click to the unbeatable M SoC, no PCs can compare. 🀷 Google's Pixelbook was competitive when it came out, but as usual they seem to have lost interest in that project.

After 15+ years of using Linux on all of my personal and work laptops, I finally bought a MacBook Air for personal use. My two immediate observations are:

With a small enough history ChatGPT can construct semi-accurate narratives from Dwarf Fortress Legends exports. You really have to yell at it though because it takes the LLM a few tries to parse the XML correctly. Not too different than playing Dwarf Fortress really.
