This post sent me down a rabbit hole. I'm a fan of 2300AD, and I knew that the Twilight War and the OG Twilight 2000 set the stage for 2300AD.

I know 4th Ed is removed from this, but are there any good "intro adventures" for 4E to start Twilight 2000? I get that it's sort of sandbox by design.

I've been playing Star Citizen some time. It never hit as hard as it did tonight in EPTU, stepping off to this simple view, with the music playing, the clouds parting, and everything hitting just right. Out of all my big adult worries, sometimes little things like this make everything feel alright.

I grew up, but I never lost my love of Wing Commander. Online communities helped to keep it alive. Starlancer and Freelancer kept the flame alive and I soon found Star Citizen. I was patient with Star Citizen, but it often frustrated-- being so close to the cusp of greatness at any point. (2)

Wing Commander and Privateer were pivotal games to a younger-me growing up in a rural and lonely area. These games planted in me a love of Science Fiction that set me off through the Wing Commander books and then soon after the science fiction classics of Asimov and Heinlein. (1)

A little about me and my aesthetics, one thing I have become fond of in Sci-Fi is Solarpunk. The themes of the aesthetics also appeal to me, with an emphasis on grappling the old world to bring in a new one, while focusing on the people who live in the world and not mechanisms of the state.

The technology also imparts a fun restriction on the setting— locking in 7.7ly limitations to travel at a time builds the map for you, making the frontier truly the frontier and encouraging that uncertainty of wondering what lay beyond the edge of the map.

I enjoy the “humanity pulls themselves from the brink” aspect to the followup from the Twilight War, which in-turn ushers in a new golden age of colonialism. There is a lot of optimism and frontier’ism (is that a word?) but keeps the idea that “the more things change the more they stay the same.”

Cheers, I’ll keep and eye out! Just one quick question: what do you use for 3D design? I used to dabble back in the day and was looking for a low-cost hobbiest option to keep dabbling.

I’m currently running a campaign that uses aforementioned Mongoose 2nd 2300AD but closer in source material and background to the original non-Traveller game by GDW back in the 80’s. That said: if it’s science fiction, I’m probably going to enjoy it 😁

Personally I enjoy the Traveller “Third Imperium” setting, but 2300AD (the Mongoose remake using GDW source material) is closer to my sweet spot. Something about the 2300AD setting tickles my fancy of “near future” science fiction that is plausible enough I can suspend disbelief.

Traveller Mongoose 2nd Edition is (probably) the most widely accepted/circulated— it meets the modern standard for good art and decent copy editing. Cephus is a good alternative that’s available a bit cheaper. Folks feel passionately on either side of the fence (or still prefer Traveller Original.)

The Tigers Claw is always a welcome sight to see! Well done! It sounds like we had some similar inspirations in games over the years! I recently found the Traveller system and 2300AD of which I’ve been smitten.

Some of these designs have a Wing Commander-like design aesthetic that speaks to me. Great thread! I’ll keep an eye out for VBAM 3rd Edition !

Tried Star Wars Outlaws on Steam, wanted to like it, but it did not scratch the itch. 2 hours in and I didn’t feel a tiny bit invested in the story or characters. Kay Vess was likable but the level design repetitive and frustrating. I can see why so many were so frustrated.
