After a few months in service together, she sits in the cockpit again and they talk. She tells it what she knows. Copilot talks about the one who used to pilot it, they grieve together, long after the rest of the world. She pours one out for its old friend, and they promise not to lose each other.

The pilot swears she's heard Copilot's voice somewhere before, but it denies it. And then one day it hits her; it sounds like that hero pilot on all the posters, in the TV ads, the one who was supposed to have died a few years ago. It's him. But it's not. He's gone, and what's left of him is this.

It only calls itself "Copilot." Says it's just an onboard program meant to simplify tasks and accept input. So why does it seem to activate the shield systems in perfect time to catch strays? Why does it heave its own sighs of relief after a sortie gone well, when the pilot is safely back home?

After a while, a fresh faced academy graduate steps across the threshold into their 'new' mech. The lights inside greet them, they sit down and close the cockpit, and the radio crackles open with a voice they feel like they've heard before saying "I'm gonna keep you safe, kid."

I've always been in love with like. The idea that after enough time with a pilot, the mech absorbs bits and pieces of their personality and their soul.

A long-time pilot dies, and their mech is cleaned, repaired and refitted to a new pilot.
