Just in case she makes it onto the ballot, itโ€™s good to remind yourself who Maria Steen and the Iona Institute are - fundamentalist zealots who represent almost no one cos even most Catholics think theyโ€™re awful

They gotta stop naming roses after people, because "Come check out Dick Clark!" and "Go sniff Henry Fonda!" are both things my mom has said to me.

Watching Gaza City high rises be levelled this week while thinking of this line that I overheard an Israeli tour guide say in late July:

"Israeli soldiers were targetting particular parts of the body on particular days. One day, it was head and neck. One day, chest. One day, legs. One day, testicles. Target practice.
I would not have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes."

Hello from Washington DC, where hundreds of people and what seems like an unreasonable amount of police are assembling for the We Are All DC March

This is the first pre-planned, DC-focused protest since the occupation began. Let's see how this goes

BDS movement call for boycott of Radiohead's 2025 tour The pro-Palestine BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement has called for a boycott of Radioheadโ€™s newly announced 2025 tour.

It's not like Radiohead haven't been asked nicely over and over and over again to stop being bastards about this, for years, and their response is always condescending bullshit www.nme.com/news/music/b...

This one Dril tweet in December 2023 was a more accurate depiction of actual events than anything youโ€™d have got off newsstands, from broadcast media or out of the mouths of politicians. It hasnโ€™t got much better since.

Itโ€™s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherdโ€™s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.

But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones youโ€™ve already enjoyed and including The Shepherdโ€™s Crown.

So the greatest way to honour Terryโ€™s legacy is to pull that book youโ€™ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy.

In an article about authors opting out of a literary prize, you have included a statement from only one of those authors. On the other hand, you have chosen to include the words of two other major gender critical voices, neither of whom were in any way affiliated with the prize. 2/

The employee asked the girl and her mother if they needed help shopping. Thatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s all. The misinformation, the insinuations (because the facts are inconveniently benign) are EXACTLY what was done to lesbians in the 80s. This is the product of hate and fear, not reality.

So at this point the โ€œcenterโ€ means that people get hurt, that we're allowed to kidnap immigrants from their home, that we're allowed to throw trans people under the bus and deny them life-saving care. And that's not the center. That is fascist. That's capitulating. Compromise isn't getting your hand cut off and being grateful that they left you your pinky. Compromise means that each person gets something and maybe each person loses something, but you're actually making a difference.
