Our School District Can Now Keep Track of Your Child with Just Three Terrible Apps
Other than lawsuits, losing track of a child is every school districtโs worst nightmare. We havenโt lost anyone yet, but an EdTech company has pain...
"If you forget your login, call our wonderful school secretary, Marjorie. No, you canโt just call the office to tell Marjorie your kid is sick; youโll need to call the office to retrieve your PITA login information, then log in to PITA to tell PITA your kid is sick."

Chinaโs CO2 emissions have been flat or falling for past 18 months, analysis finds
Worldโs biggest polluter on track to hit peak emissions target early but miss goal for cutting carbon intensity
This a big deal: "Chinaโs carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"
China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

What your Great Lakes maritime history-obsessed teen's text messages actually mean:
brb = bell rang bro
rofl = rang out for lost (crew)
bff = big freakin' freigher
lol = Load of Ore on the Lake
smh = shift minutes to hours
glhf = Great Lakes hella freighter
tbh = taconite be haulin'
stfu = steer the freighter upwind
tfw = that freakin' witch (of November)
asl = a ship lost
gg = Gitche Gumee
idc = immoderate deadweight capacity
btw = beneath the waves
afk = a freighter kaput
hbd = hauler's beacon down
ily = iron load yonder
jk = just [24] kilometers
lmao = lost my abyssal ore
nbd = north bound draft
glhf = good lord, hold flooding
omg = obliteratingly massive gales
tmi = too much iron
wtf = White Fish (Bay)
I'm so worried about what'll happen when our kids are old enough to have phones!!!! ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ

U.S. tsunami warning system, reeling from funding and staffing cuts, is dealt another blow
Seismic monitoring stations in Alaska are closing after a denied federal grant, risking delayed tsunami warnings for people living on the West Coast.
Quoted supporting our counterparts and friends at the Alaska Earthquake Center. The cost of the U.S. tsunami warning and mitigation effort is really a pittance. None of it has ever been adequately funded in any administration, and now things are worse. โ๏ธ www.nbcnews.com/science/tsun...

DNR proposes limiting commercial whitefish harvest after steep population decline
The Wisconsin DNR is proposing to reduce the commercial harvest on whitefish in Lake Michigan as the population has seen a dramatic decline.
Whitefish is the highest value fishery in Lake Michigan (estimated value ~$2.8 million last year), but invasive zebra/quagga mussels have contributed to the population declining by 75% in the last 2 decades. Now, the Wisconsin DNR is proposing limiting commercial harvest www.wpr.org/news/dnr-lim...
