Were you ill or is there another explanation for drinking lager? Nothing good on tap?

The fact that for reasons I was flying to Germany with a load of German colleagues at the exact time the match was playing, and seeing their faces when they switched on their phones as we landed, was something to behold

Shooters Hill Road has also been depressingly decorated. At least they found a use for their crayons instead of eating them

Didn’t thinking I’d be googling β€œpiss-catcher shoes” of a Monday evening I can tell you that. Think I would have known them as something more Ginster related….

Lucky the FT haven’t liberally sprinkled their commentary with allusions to this phenomenon, eh? πŸ€”

Absolutely a first world problem for me and I expect only the tiniest of violins but maybe my experience and outlook illustrates why people with less to invest are also reluctant to be encouraged into something that carries β€œrisk”

Future Chris: A or B?

….. and I’m incredibly fortunate but it’s still scary. Am I saving enough? Am I doing it right? When do I want to retire? What kind of life do I want to have? And then even with the stocks and shares investing I do (pension) a get an annual letter saying I COULD get Β£xx a year. Is that good? Dunno!

Last brain fart: My parents retired about 15 yrs ago, had saved hard in cash ISAs, a small private pension (buy an annuity in 2010) and loads of Tesco shares my Mum got at discount. Even they’ve been through the wringer in that time. They do alright but are v cautious with their money….

I remember talking to you about that and no shit it sounded like witchcraft. I now have one and the difference in my perception of it depending on the change in absolute value vs the %age change….

17.07.2025 15:44 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

….. and trying to picture what the future asset’s value could be AND NEEDS to be seems for the birds. Especially when at the end of it all so long as someone put all the right disclaimers in their letters it’s basically me who’ll fuck my future up!!!

17.07.2025 15:43 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 1

…. Encourages a risk aversion even if totally irrational. No amount of people telling me β€œwell actually over x years the stock market out performs x, y or z”convinces me because even if I’m trying to transform at least some of my wealth into a valuable future asset I’m more scared of tomorrow….

17.07.2025 15:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

By a country mile my best financial investment is the place I live in and that has been entirely passive. The idea of having that (even if value reduces, it should still exist) vs the chance of losing all my money in an AI company or a boring ass portfolio of diversified stocks that vaporises….

Boasting that I’m wilfully ignorant on t’internet ain’t a great look but given my line of work one might assume I’ve at least some level of sophistication to my financial outlook. However I’m very scared of opting for something that could become 0 vs stuffing full my Junior Griffin Saver 0.01% a/c
