For nearly a decade, I lived in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood and I made my long-overdue first visit to San Juan in 2023. Bad Bunny’s show was so thoughtfully conceived and superbly executed from start to finish. Big ups to every single person who worked — extremely hard, obviously — on it.

The disappearing art gallery in your post office The U.S. Postal Service is home to thousands of historic works of art in post offices nationwide. Hundreds have been lost, sold or destroyed.

In 2021, I FOIA’d the database of USPS’s New Deal art, and each work’s condition.

In 2022, records came back with a massive spreadsheet & 1,700+ historical photos.

In 2024, I wrote the first draft of this story, at home in bed with Covid.

And now, we can finally bring you the full project.

Attendees of Docpoint, the Helsinki Documentary Film Festival, mingle in an atrium at Kiasma (1998), a contemporary art museum by architect Steven Holl. As seen from above, the festivalgoers are visible within a sharp triangle created by the museum’s complicated shape. An asymmetrical, almond-shaped staircase is visible to the right and on the wall above is a large numeral 3 that marks one entrance to the museum’s third-floor galleries.

The Konepaja neighborhood of Helsinki features redeveloped buildings originally constructed for industrial purposes. One long, brick building with a sharply peaked, contemporary skylight is a former factory and repair facility for train cars and railroad equipment. To the right of the image, a tall and gently tapered chimney rises from a matching building. In the snowy foreground are a few cars parked on the recently plowed and sanded pavement.

Helsinki’s Temppeliaukio Church (1969) was designed by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. It is uniquely situated within an excavated hill in the city’s Töölö neighborhood; the walls are bare and stacked rock and a slanted ribbon of high windows supports its circular, copper roof. In the foreground is a minimalist pulpit and two planters, out of which green leaves spill toward the floor.

Taulu is a restaurant located in Helsinki’s Central Railway Station, designed by architect Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1919. Can’t wait to go back to Helsinki after a very cold, three-day first visit this weekend. It’s a city of spectacular architecture and natural beauty, and it’s a piece of cake to get around via public transit — even with ice and snow all over.
