I agree in principle but I also don’t see how setting a referendum (which D’s might lose!) under existing constitutional procedures is a break in the rule of law.

It’s not even much of a break in norms. It’s not like the USA has strong democratic norms around non-interference in district lines!

Proportional representation and gerrymandering Proportional electoral systems largely eliminate both the built-in bias inherent to the single-seat model and the effects of partisan manipulation.

If you want to get rid of gerrymandering, the best way to do it is getting rid of single member districts.

Congress could change the law which requires single member districts for House seats. Multi-member seats can’t be gerrymandered and would lead to more parties in Congress.

The Core Problem is Single-Seat Districts Most of the world knows that PR is a better way to elect legislatures.

The game of maximizing narrow wins and minimizing blowouts doesn't work well under PR, where narrow wins result in *fewer seats* than blowout wins. District lines matter much less!

Newsom says we need to "disenthŕall ourselves of the past" and "enter a new mindset" if we want to preserve democracy. I agree with him, I just don't believe him. I think he just means Dems should be gerrymandering more. Some half-assed self-serving shit for democracy's existential moment.

The electoral college became a winner-take-all system after 1800. Before that, each state used some sort of proportional representation.

That changed in 1800. Virginia the most populous state, changed to winner take all. Other states were scared of Virginia's electoral power and soon followed.

Gov. Gavin Newsom presses for redistricting as he meets with Texas state Dems House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi became the latest to say Democrats should put “everything on the table” if Republicans in Texas are going to redistrict mid-decade.

Progressives skeptical of Newsom's house gerrymandering plan r called pearl clutchers. But now Gav wants to put Dems back in charge of #CALeg districting too. Incumbents think they should get to pick their voters. Nah, lets get rid of single winner districts instead.

By the way even if you don't have aggressive political gerrymandering, single member winner take all districts give unfair advantage to the majority party and way underrepresent minorities. There are just different degrees of the same problem.
