What we know about Trump’s executive order seeking to close the Education Department Officially abolishing the agency requires an act of Congress. But a directive from the president could still play havoc with schools and federal programs.

While this EO cannot actually close the Department of Education (only Congress can), it can wind down important programs that are critical to disabled students, civil rights cases, funding for disadvantaged schools, and data collection/research on best practices.
