Some changes in BioMenace Remastered are very obvious, like Snake's skin color, but we also made many subtle enhancements. E.g. this floating platform which now has animated blinking lights (static in the original). And it only blinks while moving 😎

Found an old screenshot (left) from the very beginning of BioMenace Remastered dev - a proof of concept made before any artists joined the team. The game has changed quite a bit since then, and now it's less than two weeks until release (Dec. 18)!

People have been asking us if we can add the possibility to play with the original PC-Speaker sounds. So we did. You can also combine it with music. A lot players that played BioMenace in 1993 experience the game like this. How did you play it?

great filters in Staging, and is also most accurate. Surprisingly, emulating the sound effects 100% correctly is a bit more involved compared to the music, and that felt like too much complexity compared to playing pre-recorded samples.

It's a bit of a mix, the music is emulated in real time using NukedOPL3, but the sound effects are pre-rendered - recordings created by running a modified version of the original DOS game in DosBox Staging, to be exact. This makes for faster loading times, allows us to take advantage of the (cont.)

probably requiring a rewrite of the original engine for 32-bit protected mode. And after that all the new features we added would also need to be backported. Including our more advanced level file format

Not possible, at least not with the original DOS engine. The original game already struggles with the 640k memory limit, and episode 4 has larger levels with higher object counts, there are way more and much larger sprites, etc. So it could be done in theory but would be a massive effort (cont.)
