Immune protection and disease tolerance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections by pyruvate cross-feeding Chronic infections by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in people with cystic fibrosis are characterized by persistent inflammation and oxidative stress, yet the mechanisms enabling bacterial persistence are not...

Pyruvate secreted by P. aeruginosa acts as a signaling molecule during infection, reducing oxidative stress, dampening immune activation and promoting persistence
Bacterial metabolism isn’t just a background process but an active player in infection🦠🧫

This shows that past exposure can affect future evolution.

The larger population bottleneck due to the longer lasting efflux phenotype promotes the evolvability of drug resistance.

Pyocyanin produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is responsible for the elevated-efflux phenotype.

The overnight exposure to conditioned medium of Pseudomonas aeruginosa creates a longer lasting elevated-efflux phenotype, which is maintained in the absence of the conditioned medium.

We found that the past exposure to Pseudomonas aeruginosa conditioned medium promotes the evolution of antibiotic resistance in enterococci.
We tested both rifampicin and nalidixic acid.

We used a high-throughput mutation rate assay to determine the antibiotic resistance evolvability in the presence and absence of conditioned media.

Science Needs to Embrace the Idea of Style How do individual scientists approach their work? These stylistic differences can influence the process of discovery.

On scientific "style" for @undark.org:

"[Style] is a positive feature of science that facilitates different routes to solving problems.....We can embrace differences in our approaches while still promoting rigor and clarity."

While I do see the merit of this study (congrats! I will use it in my EvolMed course),
I do not agree with all the assumptions about women 'leaving leadership positions' attributed to this in the popular news article.
(It's not all G, how women's E is handled in society plays a large role too)

We analyzed changes in physiology relative to menopause using two large scale studies that include millions of lab tests. Rather than align by age, we used statistical inference to align tests to final menstrual period. (1/2)

Really pleased to share the first paper to come out of the lab.
We found that hospital patients were frequently colonised with P. aeruginosa and that the same clone was shared between the gut and the lung.
The phylogenies indicate that the clones moved from lung->gut
